Putting a TrueTrac in a 9"

I have a 9" open differential with 3.50 gears. If I want to keep the same gears but install a TrueTrac, is it as simple as taking out the carrier, swapping the ring gear onto the TrueTrac unit and reinstalling? I can understand possibly having to adjust shims left or right but the pinion depth shouldn't need to change, correct?

First , great choice to install a truetrac. :thu :thu
Second , before dissamble , take some measurement ring to housing.Just in case.
As always , you should check the whole unit like a complete rebuild would need.

Ideally since you don't need to pull the pinion you should be able to do as you describe. The crush sleeve and pre-load should not change. The shims should get you back to the proper tooth engagement pattern. Some Ford ring and pinion gears are indexed. You may want to check that or mark them just to be safe.
