Question about friends 04 ranger--

2004, 4 litre, auto, ranger, 107,000 miles, well maintained. quit running like the key was shut off about a month ago, wouldn't restart, his mechanic replaced fuel pump, 10 days later it started, ran a few seconds, shook and would not accererate, then nothing(cranked and no start)--towed it back to mech and left it overnight, mechanic tried it the next morning and it started and ran perfect, last thursday same thing, start, shake, no acceleration, die and no more attempt to run. now again today, no acceleration on startup, shake, die, no restart----only died at highway speed once, rest at start-up, might just be coinsedance but seems to be on super hot humid days. I have done some searching on line and kind of leaning toward bad inertia switch -(they have a history on these to have a bad plastic housing that intermittently shorts out) also thought about throttle position sensor but that doesn't answer the one highway stall. He runs injector cleaner often---anyone else hear of this?

Have you pulled any codes? Dang intermittent issues are a pain. Fuel filter been changed? Normally these Fords are due a major tuneup at 100,000 miles. Could be something was missed.

Fuel filter changed, also no codes show bad when it is running correctly, I don't think they have been able to check it while not running---the thing starts after being towed in.

I had issues with heat on an '82 Ford wagon...long time ago. We carried a jug of cool water every time we drove the car. When it finally stopped, we started pouring cool water on electronic items under the hood. They are all pretty waterproof so it didn't hurt anything. We cooled an item and tried to start....took us three times of being stalled to find the electronic brain was bad. Dad had to drive the car while we waited for a new one. At each stall, he poured cool water on the box, got in and drove off. Once replaced we had no more issues.

Might have to try that.....plus, carry the code reader with them and do a test when it stops.

My buddy just called me, he left the truck at his mothers house last night because it would not start, tried again this morning, still no start, reached down and pushed the reset on the inertia switch and it instantly fired up and ran fine. He sure thinks that is the problem! Too bad he had spent $400 plus having a fuel pump installed.

bypass the intertia switch to see if that's the issue....

I suggested bypassing to him but he ordered one from a ford dealer--funny thing , the parts guy asked him what problem he was having, he had sold 4 or 5 in the last month or so, more than he had sold in the past several years---kind of makes me wonder if they had a batch of poor composite material and it is coming apart, one of the online posts I read said theirs crumbled on contact. I also think his hitting a deer about 6 weeks ago possibly had something to do with it, almost tripped, swell and move in hot weather, contract and make contact after it cools some???? I will post after he replaces it if there are no problems.
