Question for Pete or anyone in FL

The Hot Rod Power Tour forums are buzzing with concern about "Love Bugs" in Florida. They are saying that they are bad this year and people are worried about bug guts messing up their paint. Any truth to these concerns?

If you're worried about bug guts on your car, don't drive it. It's impossible to not get the front of a car covered in juicy country bugs in the South.

Love bugs are a plenty and they are nasty. Maybe not as nasty as North Florida Hillbillies, but nasty nonetheless.

Put some of that clear protective film on the front of the car if you don't want it bugged up.

I'm at the Jacksonville MCA show. Folks who drove northwards from Florida have their front bumpers and hood covered with love bugs. You must clean them off promptly or the paint will be ruined. They are nasty. They come out in May and September. I drove east to Jacksonville and didn't encounter them. As long as you don't go south of I-10, you should be all right.

During my time in the deep south some of the people would spray PAM on their cars to prevent the love bugs from damaging the paint. If you don't so something they will damage the paint.

Hmmm...that might work. Good luck getting her to hang on, though.

If Pam was in her birthday suit on the front of my car I wouldn't be sitting inside the car!

I'm not too worried about bugs in general. It's just that I have recently repainted the nose so I can't wax it yet. The Hot Rod Power Tour starts in Port Canaveral Florida. So I guess the nose might need another repaint after the tour.

I've seen people use a piece of screen over the nose of the car. There was a guy at the MCA show that drove in from MS with the screen on the front.

The clear bras and screen over the rad. is your best bet. Clean often and keep the car out of the hot sun if yop cannot clean it. Nasty stuff and if one gets stuck good, soak it or you might remove a chip of paint getting it off.

I think you might just catch the end of them. All the predictions say "the month of May" so they could be gone. Hard to predict for sure. Wax the front of the car real good and maybe carry some clear bra material you could put on quick. Even with no special protection, if you wax the car good and clean them off soon, you should be ok.

Just to add a little to the current areas in Florida, or lack of the dreaded bug, I drove down to Jax today for the show from SC. No love bugs the entire way.

will these Love Bugs still be bad in two weeks?
They are not too bad down this way (Mid-Fla.) (maybe the lack of rain keeps them at a minimum ?) I went for a drive this weekend and only hit 6 or 7 of the little bastids. In 2 weeks it should be down to the standard skeeter hawks and butterflies.
