Quick ratio steering...

John said this '66 has a quick ratio manual steering gearbox setup. Looking for some info but it seems to be spotty at best. The lock to lock with the '70 disc brakes is just a bit over 3.5 turns. Anybody enlighten me on this setup?

Also wondering what is the benefit.....better for racing....harder to steer on the street.....more responsive to small inputs.....

It will be easier on the street as it will take you less turns to get it in a parking spot.

I think I remember John saying it was the same as the Flaming river box. Check their site and see the specs. Is there anyone that can confirm that info for me?

Less turns on the street equates to harder to maneuver in slow, tight places........

I think you will be surprised Pete. Remember when you turn the wheel you are turning less to move the tires more.

I know your car is easier than my 67 which is stock manual. I know personally.

At speed....yes. When I had the two '66s here, the normal manual in the one I sold was easier to park than this car. Tires were one size difference I believe. Both have 13" steering wheels. Just checking into things as there might be an issue with the steering wheel mount to the shaft. Would hate to have to swap the entire box if the shaft end is bad.

Is it a long shaft? If so I have an extra one you can have. I am going to add rack to the 67 at some point.

It is the full shaft type....I do have a line on one locally for $25 if I need it. Just want to learn more about the one in it before I plan an attack of the problem.

IIRC when I compared my 67 and your car several years ago, I could swear it was easier to turn and park your car. My 67 has the standard long shaft manual. I hate it, thus the PS on the 65.

Um, If you get the Flaming river box it is a bit expensive and requires a new column.

My plan of attack is to add a Sanden compressor in the 67 and power rack with a tilt wheel. It will cost a bit, but I believe when I am done the car will have discs in the front, AC that works better and a tilt wheel as well as power steering.

Anyway, if you need my box, I will gladly ship to you when I get back in town. One of these days I am just going to have to take all my parts to a swap meet.

Does the car have the roller idler? That would help if it doesn't have it already.

My 66 has the FR box, quick steer parts and roller idler. With street tires on (215/60R-15), it's a breeze at slow speeds. With sticky track rubber (225/45R-15), not so much, but it takes very little movement at speed to steer it. The car is uber responsive!

I believe it has the roller idler but not 100% sure. Running 205/60/15's. I did bring up the tire pressure a bit about two weeks ago. That did help. Driving response is good.

My main concern is if the end of the shaft is screwed up when I remove the steering wheel, I would like to have a unit to install right away. Not sure if there is much repair capabilities for a messed up steering wheel mount threads.

I think I will grab the one locally to have in case I need it. Just a stock manual but better than sitting dead for to long trying to get one fixed.

I think that the 13" wheel may make it a bit harder too. My wheel is 15" IIRC.

Did a better check on lock to lock today.....3 1/3 turns. The steering box had the standard tag for a '66 16/1 box.

Now, would having '70 Mustang disc brakes up front change anything? Still have no idea why it is supposed to be quick ratio....

I thought you said you had the 19.1:1 box?

Maybe I forgot.....lol.....it was the third one listed in the specs book.....

Just checked....HCC-AW.

Just checked....HCC-AW.

HCC-AW is the 19.1:1 with power steering in one reference book; the FSM has it as Power 16:1, turns lock to lock as 3 3/4. When we compared Midlife with the GT HCC-AX, I got 4.5 turns lock to lock when I should only get 3 3/4. For Midlife, though, the first and last 1/2 turn was forcing the steering wheel.

At 3 1/3 turns lock to lock, I say I must have a 16:1..... and that matches up to what johnpro said in the post I referenced. Nothing special.... I think I will pick up that box I was telling you about from Don.

HCC-AW and HCC-AX internally are the same 16:1 box. The only difference was the preload.
