Why? I'm not sure I understand why. Could there be a problem with the thermostat? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bad cap, blown head gasket, overheating, overfilled, air pocket in block, ...........

Is this recently a new event? What have you done to the cooling system lately?

Was today hotter than normal? Was the cars temp hotter than normal? How soon after shutting the car off did it overflow?
I would first check the cap.
Check the thermostat by starting the car with the cap off and watch for water flow based on engine temps. No water (or very very little) should flow thru the rad. until the car reaches operating temps and then the top hose should get warm and you will see coolant flowing across the cap opening.

I normally do this with just enough coolant in the system to cover the core.

Of course, be careful with this type testing so you do not get burned.

No Pete, weather was pretty normal. About 80 or so. And yes, the overflow happened right after I shut the car off in the parking lot.

Possible lower hose collapsing? This stops the flow and can cause overheating.

Was the car running hot?

Fill the rad to the lower opening of the cap. Let car idle and look for bubbles.....indicates possible blown head gasket.

Maybe you haven't recently funded the cmayna Tequila drinking binge research project?

Broken crank, rocker came off, pin holding the reluctor to the distributor shaft came out,

wait a minute...those are my problems. What Pete was saying.

OK, I'll be serious for a brief moment here. Ronnie, have you worked on the cooling system recently? Do you have a stock temp gauge? Did it read higher than normal?

Craig, I have not worked on anything on the car recently, yes I do have a stock temperature gauge and no it did not read higher than normal. Just all of a sudden I got water coming out of the overflow. Strange....

You may have had an air bubble in the block that finally worked its way out and pushed some water out. I would replace the cap and fill to the proper level and drive it again as a test.
