Rattling noise in gear shift

I have recently developed a rattling sound in my gear shift (T5) in all gears but 1st (not in it long enough to notice anyway). It doesn't start until the transmission is heated up and goes away if I lightly push the gear shift up - doesn't go away if I pull down on it. Once I let go, it comes right back. I have tried to isolate it and see if different loads change the sound, but it's pretty much constant no matter what the speed or load.

I had the transmission rebuilt before installing it last summer and have only recently started hearing the rattle. Any thoughts?

Anxiously awaiting input on this question..... my T5 shifter does the same thing.

I've been attributing my rattle to the absence of the factory rubber dust boot on top of the T5 shifter. I assumed that w/o the boot installed the shifter is rattling against the adjustable stops.

I did have an issue early on where the Hurst shifter stick came loose from the Pro 5.0 stub shifter as the two bolts loosened up, but I re-installed the bolts tightly with threadlocker and that connection is still tight.

Do you all think it's the dust boot?

Maybe you should bring your car over so I can help you diagnose the rattle and while you're over here you can help me replace my stock shifter with a soon to arrive Slik Stik.

Yeah, what type of shifter are you using?

IIRC there should be a plastic type of insulator in the socket that the shifter ball fits into in the trans.

I'm using a slik stix shifter, hurst lever and ball. I don't recall an insulator (and if there was one, I probably threw it away thinking it was just for protection), but I think the noise would go away no matter which direction I pushed the ball (the ball would make contact with the socket in any direction). I have the shift boot and am pretty sure nothing is making contact with the tunnel (but I'll check).

I read a post about the bushings between the shifter and the handle and thought that could be the issue. So I took a cruise and tried to pinch where they connect to see if this was the source with no luck.

It seems like something internal since it only starts to happen when everything heats up and the fluid thins out.

@craig - yes, your expertise in troubleshooting odd issues and mine in removing and installing the shifter with some kind person holding the transmission up under the car would be a great pairing!

Why don't you call Bruce at Modern Driveline. That is whom I bought all my T5 stuff from including the Slik Stik.

Thanks for the link! I might pickup a WC T5 and disassemble it just for fun now that I have a service manual.

Here is a shot of the bushing. This T5 was modified to move the shifter back, but its the same bushing.

GREAT picture. Ya think that should be greased? Where the ball of the shifter fit's into the bushing? That may be what's causing my rattle. One more thing to look at/into.

Dave, IIRC you don't have to grease it. Trans fluid should be splashing up on it while the trans. is in use. It is somewhat open down into the trans. from the shifter area.

I wonder if they fail often, I went to the Ford dealership a while back to buy one and they sold them in a bag of two....
