Razorblade

I'm thinking of getting those old school razorblades that you have to use a leather strap to sharpen. I won't have to keep buying cartridges which are not cheap. I like the Dovo blades. Does anyone use the old fashioned razorblade? I never tried an electric shaver.

I think the wife has seen way too many movies where throats were cut with those for me to have any around our house, she might sneak up behind me and ------

My wife wouldn't have to sneak up behind be...I'd probably end up slipping and doing it to myself. Or I'd come to work with about million pieces of tp stuck to my face. :craz

No..... but my Grandfather did for most of his life. I used to wonder why he was always walking around with a small piece of TP stuck to his face. I asked him one time when I was a kid and he told me:

Heck, it's only one or two pieces now.... you should have seen me 30 years ago before I got real good at it.

You may want to re-think your plans, just sayin'.

In college, there was an old school barber shop nearby - man's place, with dark wood, old school chairs, old school men's calendars (of the VGOF loungue type). Darn, I miss that place. You could still get a shave there; they did the whole hot towel, straight razor bit. Best shave I ever had. I'd often go there if I had a few extra $

No inclination to try it for myself, I end up with enough nicks now.

I got a shave with a straight razor once. They come with a disposable blade in them now. Anyway, it was a good shave except for the spots where the nicks were.

They are tough to use, but doable.

Personally, I use a Norelco electric and it is fine and even with that my face gets nicked. So, when money is better, off to the laser removal and for the gray hairs, electrolysis. May only get part done so it isn't so think. But I have no desire to grow a beard and am lazy and don't want to shave, so....may be time to make it go away for good!

I would think that if a straight razor was so good more people would use them. I switched from electric to disposable many years ago and get a much closer shave; faster too.

FYI, I use a 50-/50 mix of gel and regular creams.

Someday, I'll try an old school shave from an expert to compare results.

No thank you--gives me the heebie-jeebies ever since seeing this movie.

How do I post this link to show the video thumbnail thingy?

I go to an old fashion barber shop and they still use straight razors when they shave the back of your neck. They use the dispenser that heats the shave cream up. Real cool joint, three barbers, old fashioned chairs and everything. They got a pretty sweet surround sound setup in there and always have something playing, usually something that is still in theaters if you know what i mean. The guy I go to is the same age as me and already a grandfather, so its good to give him crap.... Was planning to go by there after work but just remembered they are closed on Mondays, i guess my mop headed son gets one more day before his "trim"...

I used a straight edge for a few weeks while I was in college. It was a pain to keep sharp. When Gillette came out with their Trak razor, I tried it, and have only upgraded to the TrakII several several years ago. My current razor body is on it's last legs, and they don't make them anymore.

Now all razor blades come with that stupid-ass film on it, and it's getting very hard to find blades that don't. I'm allergic to that film. I'm also allergic to almost all gels and creams that come in a can. I've been using shaving soap (mug and brush) since 1971.

I've used a Braun oscillating electric almost exclusively since day 1. Rotaries catch on my thick neck hairs and razor burn the hell out of me. I switched to a Remington once and regretted it for the 6 months it worked. Back with a Braun and I love it.

I've used a disposable, and while they do shave closer, they tend to irritate my skin more if I use them consistantly. My barber uses an old school straight razor (his grandfather's) to touch up the edges after a haircut. He's very good with it (only cut me once), but I'd never trust myself to use one. I'd bleed all over my shirts.
