Rear IDentification ?

Hey guys...I bought a 67 original v6 mustang. It has a 302 and 5 lugs but i am clueless on the rear end. Can any one tell anything about the rear from these pics? Thanks guys

Looks like the standard 8" which most likely a 2.79 ratio. Is there a tag? Do you mean a V8? No V6 in 1967. Unless the engine swapped out, the V8 would be 289 with an 8" rear.

Ok John, I'm more confused now, what model came with the V9? :roll J/K

I believe he means it was an I6 that's been converted to V8 suspension/engine.
John's right, looks like an 8", as he mentioned there may be a tag still attached to the pumpkin nuts with stampings that will tell us what ratio was in it.

Looks like that things been leaking unless that's blow back from the drivetrain leaking but I'd expect to see the driveshaft covered also. There is a fill level nut on the front side of the pumpkin, the fluid should be up to that access hole. If you take the pipe plug out and can't feel fluid with your finger it's probably low. Could be the pumpkin seal leaking or the axle seals but I'd lean more towards the pumpkin seal due to how heavily caked the grease is on it.

awesome ill have to look for the stamp! And yes i6 sorry guys! Its a T Code vin. I just had my acl reconstruction but i think ill be able to get under and find the stamp

It should be a 'tag' attached to one of the nuts holding the front of the pumpkin in. Wipe it off and write down all the stampings on it.

Thanks Jon! I actually have been talking to your Friend Steve up here in Old Hickory!! I live just down the road from him! Glad to see guys in the area!

Yeah I think so!!! I replaced my rear tail piece on my th350 so i think i can figure out how to replace a rear seal....Atleast google will have an answer just in case. Im a novice but i learn quick...Definitely should of paid attention to my master mechanic of a dad as a kid

Just need to buy some tools and let my ACL to heal before i can. In the mean time I ordered some POR-15 for the surface rust on the floor boards and trunk. Atleast i can do that and give her some TLC

You have my sympathy :char J/K Steve's a great guy and has helped me plenty.

You can probably get the Fel-Pro gasket at a local parts store: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-r ... /make/ford
The 3rd member is heavy, awkward and stinks to high heaven so prepare accordingly with a jack to lower it, rags, plastic bags and rubber gloves. I used oven cleaner from the dollar store to clean the casing in/out but don't think I'd use it on the 3rd member due to the clutches. Someone here should have advice on something you can flush it with. Get fresh crush washers for reinstall, they are one time use. You'll have to pop the axles out a few inches to get the 3rd member out.
