removing lca ball joints

Rick sent me a set of used LCA's some time ago. Mine had bolt in ball joints so removal was easy. His has the factory riveted joints. How have you guys removed these without destroying the lca's?

You can try to drill them out or what I just did this weekend on my kid's truck was use a grinder to cut an "X" across the top and then used a chisel to knock the top off and then drove the remaining part of the rivet out with a drift.

Yes, grind off the head of the rivet and then just punch through afterwards. A dremel with a grinding wheel might work.

Do the "X" thing on the rivet head and don't get carried away and cut into the metal of the arm. Get it real close and the chisel can finish it off without damage to the arm. It's a lot easier than trying to get a drill lined up perfectly on a round head!

What a PITA... I hope these are easier when on the car because they sucked off the car. I ended up going a different route when the x-thing wasn't getting the results I wanted. I ended up turning them over and using a spot weld cutter on the flat head of the rivet. After I drilled out the center and remove the outer edge, I was able to knock out the rivets. Of course one had to be a pain and had to break out the BFG. Done.

why are you taking off the ball joints?

They are getting converted to Opentracker supplied screw in ball joints after I box them in with his supplied pieces, then they will be converted to roller with his supplied pieces. Opentracker rollerized full suspension on the cheap lol
