Removing surface rust with tin foil -WTF !

For all you dudes and dudettes who have surface rust on your chrome bumpers or whatever, have you considered using just water and tin foil?

That's right. Our bathroom light fixtures have started to show some surface rust on the chromed base unit due to the typical condensation that develops due to showering, etc. So the trophy wife decides to go online and see what it would take to make these fixtures look a little better instead of just replacing them. She found some youtube video that said all you do is crumple up some tin foil under some cold water and then start scrubbing away at the rusty areas.

No way did I believe this nonsence but since I've been taught the golden rule of SWMBO :wor all I could do is give it a try.

Here's a pic of one of the fixtures showing before on the left side and afterwards on the right. Don't know how long this will last but it sure is much better than before and only cost me a couple hours per fixture. Since the foil was probably something like a brillo pad, I'm going to clear coat these pieces just to give it some protection.

Now that you used your tinfoil hat for rust removal, are the aliens starting to take control of your mind???

Learned something like that last week, some yahoo used a sharpie on the dry erase board, some dude at work said to trace it with dry erase marker and it will wipe off, sure enough.........

I guess you need to step up to an armadillo hat. they protect you so much better than tin foil. :thu

tin foil or aluminum foil? I have not seen tin foil for sale in ages.

I also suspect that some of the magic is occurring because you're wearing that frickin panda hat....

I was detailing used cars at a dealership in the mid 70's --lots of rusty bumpers , the old bodyman watched me use rubbing compound several times before he handed me a piece of aluminum foil and said wad it up and rub with it---works great, I have used it on some pretty rough cragars in years gone by--

i've used 0000 steel wool for years. i imagine the tinfoil wadded up is probably about the same "grit" as the steel wool, so i see it working as stated.

We have some cheap stainless steel dinner knives that have rust spots on them (they are cheap). Deb was thinking of replacing the entire set last week. I read this post last night, ripped off a pc of foil this morning and in just a few minutes those knives looked brand new :yah

It works great!
