Rental Car Review: Kia Forte

Well, here I am...killing time until Monday. Might as well give a rental car review. First, my reservation was with Budget. I got the keys, and went to the car. Big notice on the driver's side door: $250 fee for cleaning the car if you smoke. Budget apparently went to non-smoking on Oct 1., along with Avis. So...I returned the keys, and went to Hertz. Got a Kia Fortis. I start out leaving the airport and get immediately on the PA turnpike. I look down at the dash and see a warning light for low tire pressure. Damn. I'm on a turnpike with tolls, and the nearest pull-over with any kind of service is 60 miles down the road. I get out and sure enough, one tire is very low, almost flat. I buy a tire gauge and fill it up to 35 psi, and the light goes out. Whew! 3600 miles and a flat tire?

So...I continue on, monitoring the dash idiot lights, which never came back on. This AM, I go and check again, and sure enough, the light is back on. Call Hertz and they say take it to Firestone and they can bill Hertz directly. OK...1.5 hours later, the tech comes out and says it's leaking at a previous plug, and the tire needs replacing. The manager tries calling Hertz without success, so it looks like I'm gonna have to pay and get reimbursed somehow. This is on a gov't travel card. Hertz previously told me if necessary, simply pay for the service and it will be deducted from the rental agreement. Now how am I going to vouch for the charges? So...while the tire is being replaced, I call Hertz again, and finally got someone there to provide a Purchase Order number for Firestone. All is well: I'm out the door with a good tire and no charges I have to pay.

So...what is the car like? Not too bad. Power brakes are very touchy. Comes with Sirius radio (good!). Drives like a rental car. No windshield scraper and it's snowing. Oh well.

I used to deal with getting authorization to replace tires like that. Real pain in the back side for the salesman. Sounds like you are loving the snow....... You will have to start carrying some Frebreeze for the smoking. Won't be long before they all go that way.

I am enjoying the Ford Focus that the local dealer rented for me while my '07 is in for the new top again. (3rd top in 36,000 miles, different reason each time) Mine is a 4 door auto. Got 38 mpg yesterday on a short road trip, 26+ around town, takes the auto tranny about two days to figure out I want to hot rod it, not granny drive. Picked the car up on Monday, they hope to be done with mine by Wed. We will see. Also had fluid changes, hood painted, rt. rear qtr painted, new drivers seat back leather, and a couple of other monor things handled.

Drives like a rental car.

Randy,

You've got to try this....... trust me.

Get going about 35MPH and when there is NO traffic anywhere near you..... shift into Park.

After the first couple of adreneline rush experiences, work your speed up to 40 and then 45 MPH.

(Don't try this on wet or snow covered roads... road should be clear and dry)

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl "trust me" :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

I'm serious. It's a blast! Overcoming the "don't ever shift a moving vehicle into Park" sensation is half of the fun.

I've done lots of things to rentals, but not that one! Please for the rest of us......add details.

Sort of makes me want to reevaluate some of the advice I've received...

It's exactly what you'd expect would happen. The driven wheels lock up. Half of the fun is overcoming the "never shift into Park" thing, but once you've done it a few times the feeling subsides.

Gary,

It's a rental. It's "fun". You do remember what fun is, right? Or does turning 52 wipe those memories out? LOL.

I would also suggest trying this at the end of your rental period, just in case. The poor transmission makes some serious noises and will tend to make you wonder if it will be OK the rest of the trip....

Good advice. I think the parking pawl engaging spares the rest of the tranny from any damage. But who cares, it's a rental.

Kind of reminds me of that line from the movie Animal House:

"You fucked up - you trusted us!"

Dave,
The inventory of what fails by age 52 is on-going, I'll get back with you...

True story, i was with a buddy about 15 years ago driving down a brick road in his white olds 442. It was idling weird, so he kept putting it in neutral and stomping the gas. We must have been moving down this hill at 45 mph, when he through the column shifter, stomped the gas, and went right through neutral to reverse. :yikes The tires screeched, and the trans exploded. Always felt that something happened to the motor too, because we never did get the thing to run right after that. Still, its one of the top 3 most fun things i've ever done in a car :nice

If you'd get that car back on the road you might find "other" fun things......like..........Driving.

You know, i was just thinking that i like the journey better then the finish line. Now that im almost done, I really want to find a heap to be bring back from the dead. The driving part really doesn't interest me. :stfu
