Replacing a manual steering gear box

So, what is the skill level required to replace the steering box on my '66 Fastback? I have the new one in-hand and hate to wait until next week if this is something I can do myself...

Opinions?

Engine in, a PITA. Engine out, can of corn.

It's not that complicated, it's just with the engine in, there's so little room to maneuver it out. Get the car up as high as possible, remove the wheel and maybe the exhaust on the dr side. I did mine with the engine out, so it was a snap. Maybe someone that's done it with the engine in will chime in.

If you have to ask, honestly save yourself a lot of frustration and wait to have it done. Aside from being tough to get at and out, you'll also need a puller to get the arm off which you may not have and will need to get your hands on. This is the kind of project Murphy loves to help with as well!

In most cases you need a steeringwheel puller to get the steeringwheel of the shaft.
I presume you have the long shaft steering box.
You also have to pull the pitman arm off the center link. Have the tool ?
Like Mark said , set the car as high as possible because you only can pull the complete steeringbox from under the car.
First pull the steeringwheel.
Second , remove the steeringcolumm entirely.
Disconnect the pitman arm from the center link. Have you such a puller ??
Loose the three bolts that secure the steeringbox.
Now you should be able to pull the box from under the car.
Once you did , set up the steeringbox in a vise and find center position of the steeringshaft .Mark the pitman arm to the box.
Take you new steeringbox and position the steeringshaft also the middle / center .
Take a puller and pull of the pitman arm of the old one and position it on the new one in the same location.
You can't go wrong there as it ( pitman arm ) only can mounted in four positions each 90

Sounding more and more like something best left to others... I think I'll stick to driving and changing oil.

Thanks!

Dropped her off at the shop. They'll take of the box, the release arm clip, and a leaking axle seal. I should have it back by next weekend.

Sadly, the steering box, and rear end, are the only two areas these guys didn't redo after I took her back from the original shop... It's now official; EVERYTHING done by the first shop was garbage...
