Rigorous TX state inspection

I run standard plates on my car and have to get a safety inspection every year. I took it today to the neighborhood quickie stickie shop. The inspector was an old coot. He asked me to open the hood, looked at the engine, whisted, said I could close the hood, walked around the car and started filling out the new sticker. He asked me if I wanted to remove the old sticker, which I did, and he put the new one on. Never drove the car, checked the lights, nothing. He checked my insurance card and took my $15. WHen I asked if we were done, he said " I see the condition this car is in. I know guys like you and I know if a light was out, you would have replaced it and polished the socket before you put it in. I also heard it running when you drove up and the engine looks like you caould eat off the intake and you probably polish the dipstick before you put it in. I am done, and I wont tell if you won't. I would rather not drive it unless you insist because I would want to get on it." I said that we were done, thanks. I am sure that this would violate his inspection license, but I appreciated the attitude.

Gotta admire his honesty and overall, you cant fault his logic

My inspection station tells me to bring in the Mustang's reg and mileage and color and he just does the inspection via the computer as if the car is there. He knows the Mustangs don't get driven much and knows everything that needs to work does.

Some places are very good about that.

Florida doesn't inspect ANYTHING. :yah

SC doesn't either! :thu

The "system" was so "broken" here before they got rid of it, I had many inspection stickers issued to cars that weren't even in the same COUNTY, let alone in the inspection bay!! :confu

My Trans Am passed last Saturday and the horn wasn't working. Funny thing is it was working at the house 30 minutes earlier, LOL! Before I headed over there I had tested all the lights, horn, etc. I had never tried the wipers but luckily they worked.

The guy pointed it out to me but passed it anyway. I haven't tried to chase down why it isn't working yet but he probably figured I would as one of many projects.

NJ only check emissions now. Bald tires, faulty lights, or bad winshield wipers use to fail you. But they found out the state could save millions in time saved by not checking all those things, so now you just worry about emissions. And as far as classic cars(25years or older) go no inspection ever.

The place I used to go in Plano was like that. This year they had a new guy that insisted that 68s need emissions which meant (in his tiny brain) it need a cat system. I flat out told him he was wrong and ignorant. I will be finding a new place next year.

So where is your place, Kevin?

And you guys give CA crap for smog inspections:p We don't get anything safety inspected out here. But then, seeing some of the cars on the road, we probably should...

This Californian never had a problem passing the TX inspection. As long as my lights, horn, and wipers worked they were OK. Did it twice in Cass County. Except for the weather in East Texas, I loved it. . .

Smog inspections are a federally mandated activity if the air quaility fails criteria. I've gotta get them in NC because I reside too close to Charlotte (county by county here).

Granted, CA takes it to a whole new level...

Anybody know exactly what's needed to get registered in CA? The website says a DMV employee will inspect the vehicle. What? Lights? Do I need to fix the parking brake?
