Rim & Hubcap question

I am restoring a 67 coupe with 4 lug wheels. The car came with the standard 67 hubcaps and I want to upgrade to the 67 wirespoke hubcap. I have purchased one on on ebay (for $23) but I am unsure if it fits correctly. Both the standard 67 caps and the one wirespoke cap are 14 inch but the wirespoke cap will not seat all the way down on the rim. I am fairly sure the are the factory rims but how do I check? is there a part number on the rim I can look for? Hubcap is not bent or damaged in any way, I have tried it on every rim and get the same result, whats up Standard hubcaps fit great but I can pull the wirespoke hubcap off with my bare hands.

I'm just guessing that maybe the 5 lug wheels might have been wider than the 4 lug? Do you know if it is bottoming out on the outer rim or in the hub area? I don't know a lot about hubcaps, but the standard is cone shaped. Is the wire wheelcover more flat? Also it may be thicker in the flange area for the spokes? All guesses on my part...

Yes it is bottoming out. the flang around the outside of the hubcap hitting the rim. The distance between the teeth that hold it on and the flang looks the be the same distance as the space between the teeth and the edge if the standard hubcap. The difference is the distance between the flang and the face of the hubcap.
Hubcap sticks out about 1/4 inch from rim??? looks like the teeth on both go to the same depth on the rim.

Questions...
1. Anyone know the stamp number for the 4 lug rim (I want to insure i have the correct rims)
2. Were wirespoke hubcaps used on 4 lug rims?

Hi,
I have been using the wirewheel hubcaps on Mustangs for years. It sounds like you have yours installed correctly. The wirewheel hubcaps sit out a bit from the rim,it is normal. This is mentioned on page 15 of the March-April 1965 shop tips magazine, they go onto say "It should be noted that the outside rim of the wheelcover will stand away from the wheel(rim) flange,,This design is not suppossed to be flush against the wheel". As far as your other question the wirewheels were available on both 4 and 5 lug rims and they used the same (standard) rims that would have come with the standard hubcaps.

Thanks, great reply! This is what I see, the hubcap will not go flush with the rim. I have I have pulled the teeth out to get maximum "bite" on the rim and they seam secure so I think I am OK. Thanks again.
