Road rage incident

On a late commute to work last week I had a strange run in with a guy that seemed to have road rage issues. The beginning of my 40mi. commute every morning takes me off the main 2 lane road to a left hand turn onto a 2 lane merging down to one in ~25yrds. The next 5 mi. are through a park, one lane with intermittent passing zones, windy, no shoulder, mostly just driveways and 90* turns to no where off of it. The speed starts at 30mph for 1/2 mi., then 40mph 1/2 mi. then 45mph the remainder to a 70mph hwy.
I commute in an '01 Miata so it's not intimidating...

I am stuck behind an ~'05 white Dodge Charger V8 (dual exh.) with tinted windows, chrome rims and a space saver spare on the left rear for 1/2 mi. of the normal road leading to the turn, he's tooling along ~5-10mph below the limit, talking on a phone I'm guessing. As we hit the left hand turn at the light to start the 25yds. of narrowing lane, he swings wide into the right lane, I jump into the left lane and begin to pass not wanting to be stuck behind him tooling along for 5 mi. As soon as I near his left rear tire he begins floating into my lane with both left tires over the line, not like he's changing lanes but like he just doesn't care if he's in a lane or not. I lay on the horn swerving over the middle lane to my left and gun it past him to avoid contact and oncoming cars.

This is where it gets interesting as I get up to 35-40mph in the 30, he guns it and runs up on my rear, then proceeds to let off, gun it, swerve left and right darting at my bumper, crossing the middle line as he does it. After 30 seconds of this I give him a brake check down to the speed limit. I see the whites of his eyes as he grabs the wheel and leans on his brakes >that worked...If I allowed it to continue I could see him clipping an on coming car head on as he was only paying attention to my bumper. We are coming to the 40 mph zone, I see an 18 wheeler coming towards us ~75 yards away. He guns it swings out next to me to pass, not wanting to risk anyones life I slow so he can pass. Once ahead of me he basically slams on his brakes and gets down to ~10mph, I leave 2 cars lengths to see what the idiots up to, now cars are piling up behind me so he turns on his hazard flashers...
We continue this way with him slamming his brakes everytime he has a chance but I'm leaving too much space for it to cause me problems. At one point he slows to ~5mph like he's going to stop. I unbuckle with obvious motions awaiting a confrontation and pull as far to the right as I can (no shoulder), he speeds back up to 20mph.

When we get to the 45mph zone I decide to try and pass, guess what, he guns it, I know we ran past 45mph and I was door to door with his V8 and my 140hp 4 (forgot to turn the AC off, I may have been able to pass then..). I relinquish not wanting to risk life again and pull back behind him. I easily return to my lane and handle the oncoming curves, he crosses the center line twice due to the bulk of the Charger, his lack of driving ability or trying to watch me in the rear view? We continue with a trail of cars behind us until we turn onto the minor 70mph hwy. He turns off his flashers and accelerate to speed in the right lane, I take the left and pass waving.

I always redo these types of scenerios in my head after, due to training, thinking of what I could have done differently. The only thing I can think of is at the point he slowed and turned on his flashers I should have found somewhere safe to pull off, let a few cars pile up behind him and then merge back in. Not being able to see me and inconveniencing another car might have prompted him to drive normal? My wife asked 'what did you do to him to cause that?', my reply - 'I honked when he drove into my lane'. I have to admit, I did envision his space saver blowing out during his highspeed failure to control moment sending him into the ditch....

I have have to admit you handled it better than I would have. My wife swears I'm gonna get shot one day. A-holes like that get a real challenge from me when they F with me like that. I'm normally very mellow and calm but I take driving very serious and I cannot tolerate that kind of nonsense. I know I should behave as you did and prevent any accidents but I tend to try and kill the M-F er even if it might kill me too. I have done more than brake check. Several times I've come to a complete stop in front of the idiot(s) and got out of my car in the middle of the road and start walking toward them. Everytime the chicken sh!ts run away. They think they are tuff behind 4,000 lbs of steel. I may get my butt kicked one day but they will know they messed with the wrong dude too!
Sorry, my blood pressure has gone up just reading this.

I should add that while I don't instigate these "road rage" incidents I refer to, I do retaliate with road rage of my own and I don't believe it is right or condone it. It is one of my weaknesses.
The most recent incident has been a while ago but it was late at night, after midnight. My wife was driving the School Buss with the HS Marching band, there was the equipment truck and then myself. We were returning from a competition. We were driving the legal speed limit of 55 on a divided highway 4 lanes wide. We were the only three vehicles for miles. A (young punk I imagine) comes racing up on my bumper in one of those stupid looking 4x4 trucks, you know the type, the front end is way in the air the tail is dragging like it's full of gravel or something. He has those obnoxious super brite blue headlights. Between the 45 dgree angle of the truck, the front lift, him tailgaiting me for no reason and the britghness of the lights, I began to get irritated. When he finally got bored or was finished jacking off and realized he could pass anytime, he did fly past me. I moved over and flashed my brights on and then off and moved back into the right lane just to let him know he was irritating people. Well he went on and passed the equipment ruck and the buss. I didn't think anymore about it. Then a short time later he was pulled over and as we passed he got back on the road and rode my butt again. This time I moved over and he followed. We were all alone on the road (except the the truck and buss in front of us). I slammed the brakes with both feet and came to a stop, had my belt off and the door open before the car came to rest, by the time I reached his truck he was backing up and ran away. I would have so loved to punch him in the face!

I really hate when people ride my butt also. It is really nice when you have a car that is manual, and you just put it in second and dump the clutch. Its like hitting the brakes with no brake lights. Nothing like seeing the person freak out after that. They usually won't follow so close after that.

oh, I don't need any more ideas... but I like that one!

Speaking for all the tailgaters out there I can tell you brake-checking and such only escalates the anger. Better to just move over and let them pass. Better yet, also give the "sorry" wave" and let them feel they won. Nothing good can come from ramping it up. It just makes you as bad as them really.

When beside him I would have given a wheel jerk to make him think he was gonna get hit. Works like a charm.

Read Pete's reply Duane, I'm not going to scare anybody swerving at them in my DD but I am getting 30mpg and a fun ride home.

Horseplay, the only reason I gave him the brake check was that he wouldn't pass and continued to dart at my bumper, I figured how many times until he miscalculates and tags my rearend sending me sideways into oncoming traffic or a ditch. The brake check worked, he could have passed me at any time but was toying with me, as soon as I brake checked he passed in the oncoming lane.

I understand whole heartedly Craig and have done similar things years past, lucky for me I thought about the innocent 18 wheeler driver who he would hit head on if I accelerated while he tried to pass and what would I win... if I only had Kurt Russels car from DeathProof!

That is pretty much the definition of Road Rage.

in my case I was already in the right lane and the jerk had an open left lane free to pass but chose to run up on me and ride my tail for no apparent reason. I agree my actions make me as bad as them and probably nothing good might come but that is a lot like watching someone steel something and say better to just let them get away with it because confronting them could turn out bad for me. At least in my mind I think the A hole will think twice next time... they are the ones who cause accidents, maybe my actions will scare them a little and just maybe they won't do it again (I know it's a stretch but if I am not the only one, sooner or later they will figure it out, but if everyone just lays down and lets these thugs walk over them, well maybe we should let everybody do whatever they want...)

you guys that plan on driving the power tour better just let craig go by.
hey I don't start it, I end it!

and like I said in the beginning, I admire how Jon handled this. I don't condone my "road rage" retaliation and have been trying real hard to let it go... I could refer to many times I have controlled my temper and let them go thinking they can do what ever they want but that wouldn't have been very interesting discussion :soapboxrant
I have on occasion confront drivers on their stupidity and had them apologize and admit they weren't paying attention.
On one of these occasions two ladys were driving in a third left lane that was ending. They were well behind me and they passed me on the shoulder and cut me off. I couldn't move over because a car was next to me on the right. I slammed on my brakes and avoided the accident, the driver next to me gave me that acknowledging look like "that was close" I pulled up beside the offending car and told them they just about killed several people and they were clearly embarrassed and apologized for not realizing the lane was ending (even thought there were signs evry 500ft saying when the left lane was ending).
Anyway, I'm glad Jon is okay and handled the situation well. I have been trying to let these crazy drivers go, I hope they don't kill any of your loved ones

I can't stand ragers. Around here, it's a damn quick way to get shot, for either party.
When my folks were on their way home in their rv, some douchebag was putting along on the hwy, so dad passed him. Then got back into the right lane to let traffic pass. That didn't sit well with the raging assclown. So he stomps the gas and flys by the rv. My dad looked over to see what dude was doing, and saw the guy had pulled his pistol and was showing it off...as in brandishing a deadly weapon in a threatening manner. Dad slowed down and let him go. He already had his pistol drawn and laying in his lap in case the fool decided to escalate the situation to full blown shootout.
