Roof Decided, Now Need Help With A/C

In addition to reroofing the house, I need to replace the central a/c-heat pump roof system. I'm down to two possibilities: either a 13 SEER Rheem unit or a 15 SEER Goodman unit. After all the rebates, the Goodman probably will be about $500 less. It has a much better warranty, 10 year parts and 10 year labor.

I'm familiar with Rheem, but hadn't heard of Goodman before. They are built by Amana, who I do know. Again, I would appreciate any advice. This is all new to me.

Jerry Coleman (Coleman) is the king of a/c contractors in his part of dfw. I am sure he can chime in.

I don't know anything about them but I am seeing a lot of Goodman around here.

We have a Goodman on our house. When the old system died on us and we were shopping for a replacement, I was initially told that the Goodman was considered "contractor quality" as opposed to Trane and that's why they are so common around here. After I started asking around some more, I found out from some of those contractors that although the Goodman does tend to be cheaper so it sells easier, the Goodman is just as good if not better than Trane when it comes to quality, ie, service calls to work on them after it is put into service. Can't verify this other than anecdotally.

As a end user, my suggestion would be to go for both the Goodman and the higher SEER rating. I'm interested to see what the professional HVAC contractor (Coleman) chimes in with when he sees this.

When you live in the sun belt of the desert southwest it is important to get a great not good unit.

When I lived in Brawley I had a 15 SEER unit. It was three phase and per the AC guy across the street this was the way to go for monthly cost of running the unit.

I think the brand is less important if you have a good warranty. Besides I seem to remember that you only get about 10 years out of a unit in the great sun land you live in anyway.

I decided to go with the Goodman. The Carrier that's on there now did pretty good, 17 years of service with almost no trouble. But I've heard their quality is not what it used to be. My roof will be going on in about two weeks and then the a/c unit....just in time for winter. LOL
