Router Settings Question - Linksys CISCO WRT400N

We just got a wireless router that our nephew gave us when he replaced it with a new one. I've gone through the whole deal of resetting it to factory specs, downloading the installation wizard, running it, and setting it up. Everything works great, including the wireless part (SWMBO is happily zipping around through the wireless connection on her iPod), but I need to get into the Advanced Settings to configure certain ports (500 & 10000) to allow UDP traffic type for my work PCs to VPN through the router.

When I enter address 192.168.1.1 per the instructions, it prompts me for ID & PW. I enter default values per instructions (blank ID, PW=ADMIN), brings back to same ID & PW window. What values will get me to Advanced Settings so I can set router to allow VPN?

Sounds like the Username and Password have already been changed; that's one of the first things you should do after powering it up.

I suggest calling Linksys and seeing if there is a way to re-set the router to factory default settings, including ID/PW.

There's a recessed reset button on the back of all Linksys routers. Use a ball point pen or something like that to press and hold it down for a few seconds, the router will reboot and completely default.

Are you using admin, in all lower case, as the password?

Just logging into the router should allow you to set up the port settings.

Never mind, I got it! It turns out the website prompts for the router ID & PW established during the setup phase. I got in to 192.168.1.1 with those parameters, modified the settings for the necessary ports, and confirmed all 3 PCs + SWMBO's wirelss iPod work great!!

Since you seem to have got yours figured out, I hope you don't mind if I hijack your thread. I have an older Linksys Wireless-G router, that appears to have quit. The lights all work, but I can't seem to get a wired, or wireless connection. Any ideas?

At that point I throw them out and buy new. Never got one to recover from that point on the G routers.

Thanks Pete. I was kinda thinking that was going to be the case, but I held out a little hope!
