One post today and not reading anything else. Most of you know my car luck so kick back, grab a beverage, and enjoy.

Spent ALL day putting the car back together. All day. Started to crank the car and it wouldn't turn over. Had to laugh as soon as it happened as I knew I hadn't put the battery back in. OK, let's try this again. Car is running good so let's go for a spin. First trip down the road and she feels like she should. Second trip and I drop it down into second, nail the gas, all is well and then a "ticking" noise. WTH? Turn around and go down the road again. Still ticking so I head back to the house. Pull down the drive and shut the car off. Recrank the car and she won't run worth a (insert word here). Why won't she run? Probably because I had to completely hose down the engine bay when I got back to the house. Why did I have to do that? Probably because when I got down the drive and popped the hood to diagnose the ticking there was freakin' battery acid being slung everywhere. Yep, forgot to set it completely in the tray without the hold down and upon romping on it real good it slung the battery off the tray and the alternator blade chewed a hole in the side of the battery. Very, very good job there DA. After hosing off the engine, car, and driveway I proceeded to go buy another battery and run the car for about 15 minutes to get what I'm assuming to be a load of water in the carb to clear out. Yes, by this point I don't care if the car just blows up. Well, it cleared up and I went for another spin with no problem. She did get back up to 220* and I think I have some trash in the coolant that may be blocking the thermostat. So much for everything being clean and new. Due to the water dousing and obviously some getting into the dipstick tube, that $22 worth of Mobil 1 I just put in is coming back out. Due to the probability of trash in the coolant the new antifreeze, water, and waterwetter is coming out. Due to busting my battery the engine now looks like total (insert word of choice here) and my tenth of a mile driveway has a beautiful trail going down it. Well, the only acid damage to paint (other than engine looking like _____) is on the underside of the hood. Didn't see any on the exterior. Car ran well at the end of the day, for now, so call it what kind of day you'd like. I don't care. I'm going now to drain the oil and coolant, take a shower, grab a beer and go to bed. Have a good night.

Wow. I hardly know what to say. You'll remember this day for a long, long time.

Bush's Fault!

Sorry 'bout the run of bad luck, but at least she's running right, now. May your tomorrow be less eventful.

Holy phreekin WOW, I am beside myself on the crappy luck you are having, are you sure Mid has not laid hands on your car?

Remember this, things can only look up....at least you fixed the engine and it's back running :toot

Well, today is about the same mood as yesterday. I poured what little oil I had left down both valve covers to help wash out some crap. Bottom of oil cap, breather cap, and pcv was extremely milky white and oil was BAD. Radiator is out and is getting flushed tomorrow. Somehow there is quite a bit of junk in it that seems to be blocking, from what I can tell, about 25% of my rows...thus heating issues. Kinda sucks how that happens considering it was new and the engine was flushed when it was rebuilt. Oh well. I've got an extra wp now. Upon further inspection I see no outside paint damage but my engine definitely will not win a beauty contest now. There is absolutely nothing pretty about it. Paint, aluminum, chrome, etc is all spotted now. I see about 4 oil changes in the near future to flush everything out. After yesterday's episode I ran it for about 15 minutes to clear the water out of the fuel system and then took it down the road. I really didn't care if it blew up or not. I typically run about 60 lbs of oil pressure during cruising and with trashed oil last night still had 50 lbs of pressure. I'm contemplating running a tad of diesel in the oil to help flush things out. Any thoughts on this? I swear if someone came down the drive right now I'd sell the car. I think I'm to that point.

If you run anything in the oil, use either 1/3 can of Seafoam or some Marvel Mystery Oil. I wouldn't use diesel.

If not already done, get you a coolant filter and catch all that shite.

I saw a 65 vert that had a battery to explode, the claim to State Farm was $18K. I drove mine several months after the new engine install without the hold down bolt--it happens. Was it a sealed battery?

The alternator blades were chewing through the side causing the "ticking". If I would have stopped sooner it wouldn't have eaten through. The slinging acid was coming from it running on the alternator blades. If I hadn't just got finished putting 50% of the engine back together I'd pull it and clean it. Right now, I'm just gonna get it back on the road and make that a project a couple years down the road. I was wondering about SeaFoam. I've got a can at the house and was told to pour the can in with new oil, run it for a little and change it to the good stuff. I was told, I've never used the stuff, that a can will pretty much take care of it and I should be limited to one extra oil change. If anybody has experience with this stuff I'd love to know if that's the best way to go and if it works that well.

Edit:

Tad, will a 1/3 of a can take care of it and pretty much clean the system?

Duane,
Very sorry you are going through so much. If you need a coolant filter, you can borrow my extra Tefba. Buzz me.

Sounds like you need to take your own advice. :pick

Thanks Craig. Rest assured I'll be buying one. Maybe the guys will tell me its worthless to "boil" it and I'll have an excuse to get that al. rad. Wait.....excuse??? Maybe I could use the same excuse that I have on the rest of the stuff...building my parts inventory.

:wtf

Sorry to hear about the bad news, but I can relate. I've had some bad crap happen to me while working on my imaginary project. About 6 months ago, I changed the carb and took my car out for a test drive. While I was a few blocks from home, but only going about 15 mph, the hood came up. Turns out I closed, but didn't latch the damn thing. It bent the back of the hood slightly and I am reminded of the mishap every time I drove around.
