Sanden conversion - R12 or R134a?

I am considering replacing my York stock a/c compressor with a scroll type (Sanden). National Parts Depot sells both an R12 and R134a conversion kit.

Anyone have a recommendation? Right now, I am considering paying the piper and putting in the R12 unit - the freon is still available but more expensive.
 
R12 will be colder. It would be more of a problem if you needed work done on the road as far as emptying/disposal of the R-12 plus I do not think R-12 is available for re-charging at home. I do wonder how long before R-12 is not a;;owed at all.

I have never had any issues with the R-134a and I have added A/C to several vintage/non-A/C cars over the years. I would stick with the R-134a myself.
 
R134a is the way to go.
Like AzPete mentioned , how long will it be allowed in the future.
Here in Belgium and Europe in fact , its been rare to find a car who's A/C is filled with R12.
Usually they are converted to R134a in the past.
 
ordered an R-134a scroll compressor conversion kit from Classic Auto Air. Should be in my posession by Friday of this week.

I have a set of guages and a vacuum pump so I can do the entire conversion myself once the kit arrives.

You have the gauges for 134A correct? They're different for R12.
I am on the fence with this also. I will be installing AC next year hopefully and have R12 gauges and 30+lbs. of R-12 still (enough to last the life of the system), vacuum pump. I believe the R12 evap. is smaller and have read that R-12 is more effiecient due to smaller molecules and transfers more heat more quickly. I'll be asking Classic Auto Air and Vintage Air this question when I get closer to order/install.

yes. I have R-12 and R-134a connections, as our other 3 cars (the FUCOS doesn't have air) use R-134a.

Well, it's been a while and I still have not completed the installation of the conversion kit. Work and family commitments have prevented the effort.

I am going to try and get the conversion done today.....

I'll post an update tonight.
 
Spent a few hours yesterday removing the evaporator and twisted one of the lines off at the evap. Had to go and silver solder the fitting back on. I suspect I have another two hours to get everything back connected, ready for a vacuum pull.
 
Well, I believe I finally got this item completed.

I had all assembled two weeks ago, but had a leak somewhere. Went through all of the fittings with some Joy soap after pressurizing the system to about 50 psi and got the leaks in the engine compartment and consenser stopped. This last weekend, discovered that the expansion valve was leaking and swapped that out with the suction hose (includes sight glass).

Topped everything off yesterday and took it for a spin. I may drive the car this coming Friday - and I'll check the pressures later this week to see if I have a seep somewhere.
