Saw something amazing today.

I guess I don't live in the real world, I was in line at a grocery store today behind a young girl(15-17?) who purchased a candy bar and a bag of chips then whipped out her W.I.C. card(food stamp card) to pay for it, I honestly don't have a problem with someone receiving help for food/staples etc when they need it, especially children, it was the $50. dollars cash she was handed next that got me! I looked at the cashier when I got there and said I had no idea you could get cash handed to you from the card, she just shook her head and said she was amazed when they started allowing it also. talk about us funding drug purchases, gun purchases, prostitution, wow---I am not making this a political thing, I am just shocked it is allowed!

I didn't know they did that also. I remember local mom and pops getting in big trouble over cashing foodstamps. They gave .50 cents to the dollar. That's just crazy.

When I was in college, I worked at a Save-a-Lot. I remember a big big big women came in with 9 kids. All of them had full buggies of groceries and chose me to check them out :char Anyhow, they total came to 1400 something. I ran her EBT card and it would print out the balance on the receipt. She still had 4200 bux left :wtf

Bras, panties, stretchy pants, rugs for the bathroom, shit for the house, candles, NAME IT. Everything you can imagine but no food. Final total...$550. I'm like, Damn!!! And the kicker is that they think they're entitled to it.

Dear Lord, don't get me started about damn welfare garbage. Doesn't matter..black/ white/ brown/ green or whatever. Just damn welfare garbage! Pay 'em to breed some more. :soapboxrant

If it's any consolation (even a little tiny bit), there are still people out there that need and use WIC and food stamps. While it's been many MANY years ago, the second job I ever had was bag boy at a Piggly Wiggly. I saw some fat ass cigar smoking jackass come in during the middle of the day and buy TWO grocery carts full to the top with nothing but steaks and prime cuts of beef. He whipped out food stamps to pay for everything. The he wheeled his cart out to a Cadillac to unload them and drive off. I was totally ticked at the obvious abuse. He wheeled his own buggy out, looking like he was the king of Siam.

The next night, late...REALLY late, a younger couple came in with a small child. They bought normal groceries for a small family. Nothing extravagant, just basics. They were dressed kinda shabby, but clean. They paid for everything with food stamps and looked around when paying. As I was bagging for them I could see the embarrassment on their faces as they paid with the stamps. I pushed their cart out to a beat up old clunker that looked to be on it's last leg. Those are the type that need it. That's the memory that keeps me on an even keel about it.

Here's what can and cannot be bought. One problem I see. It's too vague of a list.
www.fns.usda.gov/snap/retailers/eligible.htm
And of course there's a report saying it would be too expensive restrict what's on the list. What's more expensive? More definition of the list, or shelling out stupid amounts of taxpayer dollars on stuff that shouldn't be covered in the first place.

The wife used to work at a Dollar General for a few months (quit for administrative reasons...I don't blame her) and she'd come home every night with about 5 stories just like the ones earlier in here.

Reminds me of another story she told me how her family used to rent out one of their places up in PA to Section 8...one renter owned a brand new Escalade, but couldn't afford to pay any rent on time, while being paid so he could pay rent so his family could love safe? Long story short, he lost his legal battle, his room, and his car. Serves him right.

Shame how many people abuse the systems I work to pay for...
