Seeking opinions on computer

IIRC there's a few kinda geeky guys here (no offense intended :)), so I thought I'd ask.
I need to replace my nearly 10 year old desktop, and I've got it narrowed down to two almost identical machines. Both are Windows 7, Quad core processor, identical except:
One has a 750GB 7200 rpm hard drive with 4G DDR2 memory no available memory slots, the other has 1TB 5400 rpm drive with 6G DDR2 memory no available slots.
So the question is, would you go for the faster drive, or more RAM? Both are the same price.

I'm no geek but if you are just going to use it for normal surfing and not too much gaming, I would go with the first cumputer. I have 3g ram and 250 g hard drive with dual core and it is plenty fast for what I do.

huh? Those ddr2 numbers look more like bra sizes to me.

I don't think for home use you would have a need for more than 750gb. More ram is always better.

As for the speed difference in drives, I don't think you would notice it.

I would go with the one with more ram.

What video card is in these machines?

I agree. I'd also be curious to know what brand they are and if it's an Intel i7 chip or AMD. I am not an HP or Acer fan, but YMMV...heck, pre-built computers have me p!ssed off in general. Next one will be another DIY jobber for me. :ecit

They're both low end budget computers. The 1TB 5400rpm 6G is a Gateway, integrated Intel GMA 4500 graphics; the other is an Acer, integrated NVIDIA Geforce 7100 graphics. They both use Intel Core 2 Q8300 @ 2.5 GHz. I suspect that's an older chip.
Both machines probably made at the same plant, since the same company owns both (I think).
I'd really like to build, but I can't hardly compete for price. Not to mention I'd probably screw it up.

I just finished building my new pc.
Specs:
Intel quad core 8200 processor
EVGA SLI motherboard
EVGA Nvidia GTX 260sc video card
4gb 1066mhz ddr2
So far, I have yet to fully use all 4 gb of ram, and I game a good deal.

You really won't notice the difference in drive speeds. The Western Digital Raptor drives run 10k rpm, but the new WD Caviar black series drives run 7200 rpm. They're almost identical in performance.

Before I sold the computer store, Gateway was the one machine that spent the most time on the bench very closely followed by the EMachine. I wouldn't have a Gateway in my house period!

In fact I have a problem with any system with integrated parts. I prefer to build my onw, but I would say get the Acer. My Notebook is an Acer and my daughter moderated a forum from hers. We have many many hours on them with no problems.

For the money and versatility I will buy only lap tops now. I used to like the desk for gaming until gaming systems became so good. now I became older and less interested in games.
