Servo leaking

Took Gertrude to friends transmission shop a while back. At first we thought it was the pan leaking so replaced the pan. They drove her around, parked her and waited and still leaking. Well he told me it looks like its actually leaking from the servo cover. He told me its not a complicated fix, just a pain because in order to get to the servo, you have to drop the transmission. So since I finally have some spare time, some friends are going to help me and we're having a tranny party Saturday night at a friends place. He doesn't have a lift, but does have trans jack, and air tools!

I have a C4 but its not original to Gertrude. When I looked up the numbers, it was from a 70something ford.

My question is what all do I need to replace/buy? I bought the o-ring.

Do I also need to buy the flat gasket too? What about lube/grease? .

And just to be safe, the servo is this circular part on the driver side right? lol

Thanks for any input guys. Been so long since I actually turned any wrenches on Gertrude I'm all excited for the tranny party. Maybe it will help motivate me and make me want to work on Gertrude again. Lately I just haven't been interested in doing anything with her. Hmm actually, since we're going to be messing with the trans, might as well see about hooking up the speedo cable. Now to go call stores and find one within driving distance!

Don"t really know but maybe some of the San Francisco people can chime in about their tranny parties. O0. But I would think a jar of vaseline would go pretty far as a lube for the party, ah I mean "O" ring. O:)
Maybe torque specifications for the servo.

From what I could find the big thing seems to be that when removing the cover the servo could shift and the band strut fall out of place into the trans. If that happens, you would need to remove the pan and valve body in order to put everything back into place. From a parts perspective that would mean you need to have a pan gasket and plenty of new fluid on hand to avoid having to run out to a parts store.
From your pic, that servo cover uses only the o-ring. No other gasket.

I have a trans job in front of me for the weekend as well. Have to pull the trans out of the kid's 4x4, find out what's messed up and fix/re-install. Sure hope it's not too much ($$$). I've never tried to rebuild a trans before but I'll be damned if I am paying anyone $2k to do it. I just hope I don't crush myself pulling back the transfer case when dropping it. Not looking forward to that part!

Well that sounds like it could become a real pain if the servo shifts. I'll inform my crew tomorrow about trying to avoid that! Thanks for the heads up.

That is correct. On the drivers side is the reverse servo cover...the passenger side has the intermediate servo. If you look directly on the other side of the servo, you'll see the adjustment for the low/reverse band. There's a small strut on the end of the adjustment bolt that has a tendency to fall out when the servo is removed.

I've got a C4 under the bench that doesn't have any fluid in it at the moment. I can take some pics, when I get home, of what you're dealing with, if ya want me to.

That would be awesome, thanks!!

Ok...I ripped apart the trans and took a few pics for ya.

Once the pan is removed, here's the valve body.

Remove the filter.

You don't need to remove all of the next series of bolts or you'll be disassembling the valve body. Only take out the larger bolts (except for the one that holds the shifter).

Once you remove the valve body here's the two lugs

And finally the servo removed

When installing the valve body make sure the shifter and kickdown levers go into the correct space. Here's that area

When I removed the servo, the lugs stayed inplace. If you remove the intermediate servo, the lugs will fall down into the case.

Hope this helps

You rock!!

Tonight was fun. Had 10 people up at the shop for the "party". We had food, drinks, music. Working on cars is fun when it's a little party!

Well I believe we got the leaking fixed. we'll see. I have Gert in the garage and cardboard under her and I'll check it in the morning. Crossing fingers! Not only did we replace trans stuff, we also changed out my fuel pump (it was leaking too and didn't notice) with a quieter Holley, fixed a dent on the door, and fixed a door lock.

After it was all put back together, we took her for a little spin. I let one of the guys who's been dying to drive Gertrude to see how much power she has take her down the road. Me in the passenger seat of course. Was fun as hell and there was smoke! she was burning rubber baby! Lets just say he was highly impressed and this guy has a '97 stang that has 650 hp and the other guy out there has his own drag car and he was like DAMN!

No one got a video though :( Next time I'll make sure to get it recorded! But one of the gals did bring her camera and get pics. I'll post them when I get them.

Here's one picture of me being silly
