Shipping a car, out of state. ?

I know a number of members have purchased cars out of state and had them shipped/delivered, who did you use? Who should i avoid? How much is to cheap and how much is to much? Looking at purchasing a vehicle thats currently in CA and having it shipped to TX. Any (constructive) input would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how nice the vehicle is. If it's like your fastback, enclosed it the only way to go. Enclosed, I have only used Intercity Lines, and done so 3 times without any issues. The last time I used them it cost $1500 to ship my Shelby from Phoenix to Dallas/Fort Worth... eight years ago. I'm sure it hasn't gotten any less expensive. If its a daily driver, I'd look for an open carrier. I had a Jeep CJ shipped from Jacksonville, NC to Phoenix open carrier for $600. It took two weeks and changed trucks somewhere but arrived undamaged.

Much more like your CJ than my fastback, i'll post some pics if the deal works out. I was thinking open trailer. I dont want to cheap out and deal with a nightmare to save a few bucks. I found a site online and got a number of quotes, $795-975, still trying to research the companies and get some feedback.

What kind of budget are you looking at spending? My friend is a tow truck driver, but he can also haul vehicles using his own dually truck and 36ft open trailer (complete with winch for those that can't be driven). He is hired a lot to pick up cars and deliver cars all over Texas. I go with him on these road trips too to help load cars. He is the only person I allow to tow my mustangs. He has his own mustang so he understands. Depending on what you have to spend, he would probably go to Cali. He was going to go to New Jersey but the deal fell through so I know for the right price, he'd go anywhere. And you'd probably get the car faster than transport company.

If you want, you can PM me, and I can put you in touch with him.

So, here is what i bought.... It was from Texas, went to CA, now its heading back..... Seller is paying half the shipping so its really more about finding a reputable, reliable carrier. I appreciate the offer Kat, but i cant see your friend making a lot of money deadheading to CA to bring back a car.

Thought about getting a quote from uship.com? They are connected somehow to shipping wars TV show.

Have you watched that show? Bunch of ass hats.

Once or twice. Very big ass hats. Another scripted BS reality show.

Rick, tell us more about the Cruiser. Nice truck.

The wife was up for a big promotion at work, it would mean some extra hours and a little longer commute. Well, she got it, so to celebrate, I get a new TOYota, no WE got one....We sold our third vehicle last year since i was riding the bike 99% of the time. We decided to go back to a 3 car/ 2 bike family. May as well be something fun and cool. Jess and I have both been big fans of the older land cruisers. We looked locally and the market was pretty thin. She's an '83 and in seems to be in really nice shape, especially for her age. Pretty sure the PO has recently put about half of what we paid for the FJ into maintenance and repairs in the past few months. New brakes, rebuilt steering knuckles, shocks, header, window tint, high rise bumper jack, tires, stereo, speakers. Seems like the only thing left to do it mod the piss out of it. Jess is actually planning to start a blog about our FJ adventure. Looking at roof racks, tubular bumpers, black wheels which everyone seems to have these days. There are a bunch more pics in the ebay ad, if the link doesn't work, the item number is 111012238861

The skull will be the first to go, hopefully it falls off on the way to TX...

Wow you even got the owners manual! I did not get one with my 03 Ranger 4x4, but I found one on ebay. :hs

Santa Cruz huh, that is by Frank and Mike the infamous Norcal dudes. :sarc

That does look nice and clean except for the :skul

Those 2F's are a great engine.
I had one in an FJ40 stubby Cruiser and it was unbreakable.
I believe Toyota copied the 292 Chev engine when they made these originally.
when you get rid of the skull, lose the fairy bar on the front and get a Big Ass bullbar like we use in OZ!

That's pretty cool. I have always liked those old cruisers. We have talked about getting something fun like that just to use as a tow vehicle for the boat so that we could trade the wifes jeep in on something more economical for her as a daily driver.

Yup, pretty sure the "fairy bar" will be the first thing removed..... Jess has been parts shopping for a week now. Kinda sweet deal when the wife is so excited about a project car/truck.....

Buy ARB bumpers. They are super stout, look good and fit properly.

I'm glad the knuckles are done already. I was dreading that call :hide

You're right there.
I have an ARB bar on my current Hilux.

The "T" slots for the Hi Lift Jack are brilliant when it gets a bit soft
