These side boards are well over 10 years old but I was wondering if I should paint or preserve them with something. If painted I'd probably do a matching green.

And no, I don't use them that often. Maybe 2-3% of the time, if that much.

Re: Should I paint em.....

Maybe a clear wood sealer? I wouldn't stain them, just something with a uv protectant and keep them from rotting.

Re: Should I paint em.....

if you dont want a urethane type finish, just soak them down with some thompsons water seal. it will darken them just a hair, but will repel the water. thats what i've done with my deck the past 5 yrs until i decide on a final coating.

ahhhh. Thompson water seal. I know that stuff. Maybe a good project for tomorrow, unless I'm too busy cutting up the two big ole Salmon the wife caught today. Hmmmm....fish or wood, fish or wood.

Yep....Thompson's done once in a while really saves the wood.

Re: Should I paint em.....

Cabots is actually a much higher rated wood stain/sealer and a light color would look great. I used it on my pergola and am very happy with it.

Re: Should I paint em.....

Keep natural. Use a clear of your choice to protect them and have fun!

Thanks all. Will be going out to get some Thompson, Cabots or whatever I can find and will do it today with pics.

I'm applying Thompson water seal. Here's a before and after. Yes the seal is very wet and dark but I expect it will dry lighter

That looks very nice, that old truck brings back a lot of memories, I grew up in the country and worked for a lot of different farmers in the 60's ,(baling hay, cutting corn out of bean fields, cleaning fence rows, etc.) that was their work truck, 6cyl, granny low 4 speed, when I got the chance to drive them without the owner around I would always try (key word try) to spin the tires!!!

Too late now but just as an FYI, you would be much better off going with a simple wood oil finish. It's a more natural way to preserve and protect the wood. It will repel the water and protect the wood. I have always used such on my cedar deck and it is as good as the day I built it...some 11 years ago. I've been using Cabots Timber Oil and would highly recommend it.

I was going to suggest linseed oil---kinda the same as you were saying---a natural finish that repels water---used on gun stocks for over a hundred years.

I saw this in Alaska this past July and thought of your truck. kip
