Side exhaust with sub-frame connectors???

Just starting to think ahead about exhaust systems... I have GW sub-frame connectors on my 65 vert and I'm trying to figure out a way to install side exhaust with sacrificing too much ground clearance.

Has anyone done this that might have pics of the install?

Or any suggestions on how to do this and now come out looking like crap?

Somewhere, in the ancient past, I remember seeing pictures of one car that had that done. They cut the sub frame connectors and used a section of pipe to make an opening for the exhaust pipe to pass thru and still support the car. It might have been on VMF or Stangnet. I will keep looking for it..........

I've glanced at this while test fitting my GW frame connectors on my '67. The only solution i could come up with w/o cutting/welding was to use ovaled exh. pipe to go under the frame connector. It looks like 2 1/2" tubing ends up 1 3/4" high X 2 13/16", 3/4" more clearance compared to round piping but every little bit helps. If I do add it later I may just do dumps so I can remove the side exh. when not at the track, etc.

That's actually a good thought, I hadn't thought about oval tubing. I'll check that out.

If I have to cut the subframes, I'll probably just end up installing a full exhaust.

I was thinking along the same lines as what Craig posted. If you run forward facing outlets on your mufflers you can usually position the side exit pipes just aft of the sub-frame connectors. Ground clearance in that area will still be reduced, but not as much as you might think.

Another option.... but you stated "without major surgery" would be to run the exhaust pipes through the rear torque boxes. Doing so would eliminate a loss of ground clearance, but the tips would protrude through the rear of the rocker panel. Depending on your plans for the car this could be really cool.... or it could look stupid... it depends on the overall car.
