Side vs Rear Exit

I was thinking of making a side exhaust setup and saving the current rear setup... swap them whenever I want by unbolting from the collector or x-over. Has anyone done that?

I wouldn't want the hassle of two exhausts.....just do a full exhaust with cut outs in front of the mufflers. Have no idea of the difference in power but thew "butt dyno" shows an increase..... :lol

I have no clue what you'll gain bypassing the full exh., I take it you want the side exit to be before the mufflers?

I've mulled it over and I'm pretty set on doing both with cutouts. I talked to a cruis-in guy with a ~'08 GTO 6.0L, he started it up for me and flipped his electronic cutouts switch and WOW - now that sounded like a 6 liter! He also passed us leaving the show on the street and flipped them open, gave the throttle a blip and roared off....

I will be installing new exhaust anyway since my engine rebuild and swap to an AOD so the old 2" exh. is too small and would need to be butchered anyway. I have full length headers so I intend to do a crossover then add dumps after that with the electric cutouts installed on the dumps. I'll probably just put a short turndown on the cutout end for now and may run them out the side before the rear wheel later. I will have full exhaust exiting just short of the rear valence with turndowns so you don't see the pipes.

The electric cutouts are ~$280/pr.

for the Summit brand and go up from there depending on whose kit you use but the switch opens both at once. Looks like they put a kit together with cutouts, solenoids, wiring for $335

$350 sounds like a lot but after putting the car on ramps and disconnecting/reconnecting a few times will make it sound affordable. Initially I was just going to do cutouts and take the 3 wingnuts off, remove cap, put turndown on and run. Of course then to drive home I'd have to get back under the car and recap them. The additional $300 for the electric 'anytime' option will be worth it to me vs. toting the jack, hot exhaust, etc. plus the COOL factor will be way above that >>>Priceless.

It'll come in handy when I go to any tracks but I know I'll use it mostly for grins, like when any car pulls up next to me and revs....My full exhaust will be quiet so it'll have a jekyll and hyde side to it. I'm sure I'll use it next to ricers with fart cans or music turned so loud their woofers are overdriven and full of distortion, give a blast with the open pipes - done.

I really doubt that you would notice much gain by going with a side exhaust verses out the rear. Now if you were racing the car and trying to squeeze out every available HP, then I'd say yeah, it's worth it. I ran side exhaust for a few simple reasons.

1. I like the look
2. I like the sound
3. It was easy for me to fab

Side exhaust for me right now using 3" xpipe and a couple of Moroso spiral flows that are about 16" long I fabbed into this setup. These are bolted on to Hooker 6901 stainless headers that have a 3" collector. Only did these pending an appointment with a professional fabricator who will modify my stainless headers and fabricate a dual exhaust exiting the back end using the Shelby chrome tailpipes off of stock hangers and using Magna flows as far as mufflers go. Still gonna use an xpipe crossover.

I have also considered putting in cutouts on my exhaust. I am about to put on some JBA shorty headers and will have to redo the exhaust from behind the tranny to the collectors. Cutouts would be really cool for the reasons mentioned earlier. I need to find a point where to say no when doing mods on my car. This may be one of them. On second thought all I need to do is surf the net late at night when I can't sleep. I usually make impulsive decisions at that time. The biggest of which was purchasing the blower for my car. :thu

Depending on your current exhaust pipe size and mufflers you will probably not see much in the way of dyno hp gains but the car should accelerate more quickly when tuned properly.
