Simple stock distributor wiring question

This is undoubtedly a stupid question, but...

On the black wire that runs from the distributor to the negative terminal on the coil, the insulation is hard and cracked so I need to replace the wire. Is this a normal 12 gauge wire or is it something specialized?

Not that it matters much, but the PO mounted the coil to the driver's side fender apron, so I have a decent span to cross. I would love to come up with a nice routing for this wire and the coil spark wire.

It's a ground wire, so as long as there's continuity, it should work with cracked insulation. Better to replace it because the copper wires will corrode with time.
