Small Prob w/ Valve Covers & Rockers

DEL65

Of The Morons
I did a test fit with tall valve covers from Branda. Without a gasket, the baffle hits the locking stud/nuts. I did a double gasket and the clearance is OK. Is there a better solution, or should I get diff covers? Thanks.

Flip the VC over and give us a good pic of the baffles, are they tacked in or screws? It looks like the rockers touch the VC the entire length? vs. just sitting up at one end where the baffle is. So you can push down on the non baffle end and it will go down? Remove the baffles if they're screwed in and give us another pic if it sits flush then.

I had the baffle contact problem and chose to fab up my own baffles from some scrap I had to get clearance and then used felpro's thicker 0.313 steel reinforced VC gaskets as I read too many stories of doubled gaskets leaking or blowing out. They're not cheap but for the cost of 2 sets of plain ones and the aggravation of oil on headers, blow out fear, etc. they were worth the one time investment. What part # gaskets are you doubling up? Felpro standard #1614 are 0.141 so these are thicker than 2 of those even.

Here's what I did to my baffles:
1.6 Roller rockers on AFR 165's with hyd. nonroller cam, w/o gaskets the baffles hit only:

Old school CalCustom VC with original flat baffles, I used clay to identify where the hit by removing baffle and inserting clay:

I used saran wrap to keep from getting clay in my rockers:

fabbed baffle:

With the new baffles I had no contact even without the thick VC gaskets.

i once considering drilling a big clearance hole into the baffle where the nuts would hit and then weld little hats in to provide more clearance. that way, the clearance is provided but the baffle hasn't been reduced to the point of increasing oil dissipation.

it turned out, my cobra valve covers cleared the nuts.

Are those the "tall" Cobra valve covers Branda sells? I have the tall ones on my car and the clear the roller rockers with normal gaskets and no mods.

Hi, thank you for all the info. I'm not going to be able to get any pictures for a few days. In addition to the baffles, I'm pretty sure the lock nut/studs are also hitting the underside of the cover, but I'll double check. I have the same set up as JohnK67 1.6 and hydro cam. Yes, those are Branda's tall Cobra valve covers.

I'm going to take a 2nd look at the baffles, take photos of the underside of the covers post an update. Thanks again.
