So I am a little slow...

Since moving to Florida in 2000, I noticed something that happens every winter and couldn't figure out why.

Our water heater is set to full temperature, and taking a shower, one has to be careful about where to set the valve that controls the hot and cold water. No big deal. And we need the full temperature to ensure the dish washer properly sanitizes the dishes (don't ask...).

So what happens every winter? I noticed that I had to turn the shower valve more towards the HOT, and every spring, more towards the COLD. For several years, I couldn't figure this out, as the water heater is inside the house, and it's temperature should remain constant throughout the year.

And then it dawned on me...that it's not the hot water that is changing temperature, but the cold water! The valve mixes the hot water from the water heater with water coming from the city, running through pipes near the ground surface. Aha! The cold water changes temperature during the year, and that is what is affecting my shower valve setting!

Can one say "DUH"?

As I said, I can be slow at times, but I'm always right! :ide :naug

Put the Jack down, step away from the bottle......that is something that even my wife knew from many years ago...bet yours did too... And he fixes our harnesses.... :lol :lol :lol

Plus you need to factor in (if your pipes are in the attic like here in Texas) that the temp in the attic is about 5 million degrees so the cold water ain't so cold.

Left turn signal, right blinker. Radio on, heater starts blowing. You just gotta figure out the quirks. BTW, I've never understood the whole system in the attic. Around here all the builders are putting the HVAC (inside units) units in the attics. I know it's for space reasons but this doesn't make sense to me. Those units (condensors) drain water. They also need maintenance at some point and time. I've seen them wedged in the rafters with no way of removing them without cutting them up. WTH? Sluggo, are you saying that your water pipes are piped through the attic?

Yep, and all the hvac poo is up there too. Already had a drain become blocked and ruined a ceiling. We have no basements here. Concrete slab. I'm sure the thinking is that the pipes are more serviceable in the attic than under concrete.

Az. has the same thing in a lot of houses. I remember my aunts house in Phoenix, Thanksgiving Day, 1971, 15 plus for dinner and water started leaking out of the dinning room chandelier as grace was said. Never saw so much food moved so quick. Of course, you know what we did the rest of the day. Found 4 leaky pipes in the attic, one right above the dinning table. And, if they are buried in the slab, that also can be fun.

I've never really understood the whole concrete slab thing either. I know why, I just don't understand it. It doesn't take much to put in a crawlspace. I guess that's why I'm not a builder, IDK.

Around here some unlucky folk found out the hard way that their pipes in the attic weren't insulated good enough when we had some record cold nights (in the high teens). Viola, when the pipes thawed, they had their own indoor waterfall in the garage.

Now Mid#2...you have to bring that back up? Yes, I am slow now and I was slow then.

Randy I take back all I said about you possibly being a spy. Also about the hvac in the attic, when we had this old house rebuilt in 1995 they wanted to put a seperate second air conditioner unit in the attic, I said I think we will get by with just one outside. I do wish I could have afforded a geo/thermal system.

Well, I finally told SWMBO last night about what I had discovered, and she simply shook her head. She said "No, I know you go into the utility room and turn down the thermostat on the water heater every winter...don't lie to me!".

I swear it's the truth that is what she said! She refuses to believe my explanation.

I must say, I have to believe Mid on this......just hang around the garage for a while and it all comes to light.........with or without Wattles.

Randy, your a mess! On your next trip back up the coast, stop by and we'll discuss these things over a glass or three of YJ.
