Sold a car to a friend...

Good decision, IMO. The kid was willing to make good, and demonstrated that. Now he knows two life lessons - do the right thing, and there are good people out there who will help you if you are trying to help yourself.

Believing as I do that if we are trying to live by the (insert religious preference here) ethic, a subset of justice is mercy, I think that you did a very cool and proper thing. If the kid really is what he now appears to be, he will undoubtedly repeat the example of your forebearance at some point down the road.

I am commenting on this late as I just read it, I have sold "friends" a couple of vehicles on time years past, I never got burned by them, the wifes son (my stepson I raised like my own since he was 6 months old) stuck me for 4 grand on a s10 blazer about 8 years ago. I am not 100 % sure what I would have done, a lot would have hinged on how the kid acted after the crash, he did the right thing and came forward, shows character, you probably made an impact on him that will never be forgotten and I be you felt good about doing it! Oh yeah one of the guys I sold a 700, dollar truck to on time moved to south Georgia 15 years ago and has been pretty successfull in the concrete business, he and his partner now have 5 plants running, we have laughed several times about that old truck (and the fact I used to laon him money to buy cigarettes) he once told me I was one of the few close friends or relatives that have never asked him for money ---I replied I never will. He paid me back always and owes me nothing.

Here's another addition. I've currently got two cars that I've sold where I am the lien holder. Not a big deal on either one as I know the people well and am doing it more to help them out than anything. One person still owes me $500 and last week..........some idiot ran a red light and she t-boned him. Car is totaled. Now I get to deal with his insurance company. Yee-hah!!! I drilled it into her head to not verbally agree to anything, and get a rental asap. I hope his insurance company tries to jerk my chain. The last time one tried to do it they got stuck with a higher repair bill and a $2500 rental car fee.
