Something for the VW guy around here...

Though I'd love a late '60 or early '70 westy like my previous '69, I'm more serious about finding a nice '85-89 due to being water cooled and a lot more powerful, for if I get one, I'm going to drive the snot out of it going camping and fishing.

You do know, it is possible to upgrade the engine in a vehicle, right?
 
At one time, a company in Phoenix made an adapter kit for a 289....most likely still out there somewhere.
 
Canadian 1.9 turbodiesel version. For some people the apex is the turbodiesel Syncro version though about the only way to get one is do a swap or buy a conversion already done. There's a reasonably priced conversion kit out there to transplant a "Zetec" Ford engine from a Focus. Not really sure why you'd want to though.
