Space between the fan and radiator

1. What' the optimum space between the fan and radiator?
2. Should the fan go inside the shroud or just to the edge of it?

IIRC, the fan should be around 3/4 into the shroud and pretty close to the radiator.

I've always read 3/4"-1" from rad to front of fan and fan half in half out of shroud. I'll see if I can dig up where I read that, thought it was on a fan co. website like hayden or flexalite.
I think mine landed almost perfect to that measurement, if you put a straight edge on my shoud it would land in the middle of the twisted blade:

Edit, found this on the flexalite site, it refers to a flex fan which will flatten at full use though so I think the half in/out is for clutch fans

If it doesn't sit into the shroud then you loose the suction/drawing effect as you would be exposing the fan to air around the shroud.
