Spare the air Krap!

:wtf Today is an official "spare the air" day which means no wood burning allowed. 1st offense = $100, 2nd = $500.

A very typical situation in such a heavy populated area as I live in, during the winter with a very powerful high pressure keeping all the smoke, etc pushed down towards the ground. Meaning I can't smoke any meats or cheeses, etc.

I mean if they really wanted the air spared, why didn't they simply outlaw me from eating one of the local Taco truck's nasty burritos?

Craig,

Here's what I got from the BAAQMD's website: "From November 1 through the end of February, under the Air District's wood-burning regulation, when a Winter Spare the Air Alert has been called, burning wood, firelogs, pellets, or any other solid fuels in your fireplace, woodstove, or other wood-burning device is illegal."

Now take a close look at the regs, specifically BAAQMD Rule 6-3, section 6-3-218. A wood-burning device is defined as: "Any wood-burning stove or heater, pellet-fueled device, fireplace, or any indoor permanently installed device used to burn any solid fuel for space-heating or aesthetic purposes. This definition does not include wood-burning devices intended exclusively for cooking food, such as wood-fired ovens or barbecues."

Therefore, a smoker does not fit the definition of a wood-burning device, and should be exempt from the burn ban.

and ps...you might want to cut back on the bean burritos, I can see the haze all the way up here in Redding!!

BBQing, grilling is exempt from Sapre the air day regulations, ergo you should be good to go smoking cheese, salmon, et al....

I think you are talking about different logs Mel.

Been to see the doc for my first rotor rooter check. No logs to burn!

Texas is nice, but not nearly enough opportunities for surfing in my experience...
Like driving, we can surf year round here... :yah

Sorry, Craig, you don't get out of smoking THAT easily.

Rob,
Reading the fineline "Fires for cooking are not prohibited during Winter Spare the Air Alerts, but we ask the public to be mindful of air quality, and recommend the use of gas and propane barbecues rather than wood or charcoal-fired cooking devices on these days."

Since my smokers put out a bunch of smoke that really does a number to immediate neighbors, I think I need to refrain from smoking meat during these friggin spare the air days. Just don't want to get a bunch of calls or text messages from the neighbor, preaching the spare the air rules.

Be mindful?? I guess I shouldn't drive an old car or diesel pickup, and work for the air district!!

Try inviting the neighbors over, they won't complain about the smoke...
I think I'll fire up the BBQ tomorrow, just cause I can and enjoy my freedom, free at last, free at last.
