speedo cable leaking?

Noticed a little smoke coming from under the car on startup. Not much but enough to make me look. I've got fluid coming from the speedo cable (transmission end) and dripping onto headers. The area around where the speedo gear goes into the tranny is dry. It appears that some fluid is coming out of the fitting on the end of the cable where the speedo gear is. Is there a fix to this besides replacing the cable?

Damn you, Mark. I was talking to a coworker about something decidedly unfunny and just dinking about on the forums while he talked, and looked at your comment and almost laughed at him while he was telling me about his issue.

I had to stop breathing to keep from laughing.

Prolly just need to rebuild the carburetor.

I haven't laughed that hard all day. :bird
I'm gonna try crimping the fitting when everything cools down. Craig, I see nothing looking like it comes from the gear area or transmission. It seems to be the fitting on the end of the cable. I'll get a better look when the headers cool.

Seriously, if you can't get the leak to stop, they are only $22 at NPD! I replaced my original with a new repro cable and don't have any leaks.

Yeah, and a carb rebuild kit is only $40. I imagine I may have warped it when I changed the gear out not to long ago. If that's it and I can't stop it, I'll buy a new one.

Can you see it leaking from the cable area while the car is parked and running?

A more common leak on the C4 is on the gear selector shaft just forward of the speedo cable area. While driving down the road, fluid will leak out around the selector shaft and blow back onto the speedo cable.

Duane,
After you wipe the area clean, recheck it to determine where the leak is coming from. The reason why I suggested the o-ring at the end of the cable was because I had this problem back when I was running a C4 in Red. The oil was coming out right where the cable goes into the tranny housing. I replaced the o-ring and the leak stopped. But if you find the oil is coming out elsewhere, I'd call a doctor.
