spending $4K on Power Tour?

Well since I'm stuck here for God only knows how long, I have a question. I have about $4,000 set aside in the Mustang fund. Was saving for 5 speed conversion. Anyway, desided to go on Power Tour this year which will more than likely consume most of that in hotel, food, gas, etc. It will be fun I'm sure and wife will enjoy it too (kids maybe). Am I doing the right thing? Putting off the conversion for a fun vacation? It will set me back a couple more years but...?

I'd do it. IIRC, your kids are still young enough that they'll be going. You'll likely only get one shot at a car themed vacation. The 5 speed will always be there. The kids, not so much - soon, they'll be doing other things, no time for Dad.

A buddy did part of the tour a few years ago. He & his boy still talk about it.

Do the tour Craig, nothing beats memories of traveling with the family, ours still talks about the trips we took before I turned 21. The tranny will always be there.

Well the question is how do you save this money for the "Mustang fund"? Family vacations are a good thing, your kids are are not going to young and living at home forever. I have a little more than that saved up, but it has taken my years to get it. The SWMBO knows about it and wanted me to spend some of it on a truck that I was going to need for the job that I did not get yet. We never got to that point. Or the point is that we do have money and a good credit because the SWMBO runs the finances. If you need funds set aside for things like that then start a vacation fund or a college fund or a home remodel fund you get the point. Do not charge it unless you can pay it back right away. fd

Yeah, the boys are 11 and 12. They aren't too excited about the idea though. I think they will enjoy it. I know I sure would have as a kid. Thanks for the input. We plan to do the "Long Haul" as long as nothig major breaks along the way. About half way we will be in Bowling Green so we can sleep at home that night and repack cloths or whatever...
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it, it will kill my Mustang funds but I think its worth it too.

Don't even second guess it Craig2. Do the power tour with the family. Sounds like an absolute blast to me! Changing a tranny... not so much. :scar

I'd use the money to take the family on the PowerTour if it is something they are interested in going. I don't know much about the Power Tour but I don't think this has to be an all or nothing decision. It would certainly be possible to join the PowerTour group in Bowling Green.

If you joined at Bowling Green, you would still travel with the group for 5 days. While my family would be interested, I think they would lose interest after a few days. If you did half the Power Tour, you could have a good time with the family and still have some funds left over for the transmission.

Craig #3 or 4 or whatever he is makes a good point, why not compromise and do a half tour? Meet up with the tour in Bowling green. The other alternative is to drive to the start and end up in Bowling green, I think I would rather roll out of Bowling Green with the tour though. Long haul would be cool, but if they do get bored, why make them suffer?

No question....do it. I like the half tour idea. I think the full tour would be too long for all but the true gear-headed kid.

Short relative story.

I bought my current project from a guy in south west Louisiana. My son (12 at the time) and I flew down to get the car. Rented a U-Haul truck and trailer and drove it back home (Chicago area). We had a great time and have memories to last a lifetime. You don't get many opportunities to spend that kind of time with 'em at that age and it only gets more difficult as they get older.

11 & 12 - they might not think so, but they'll enjoy it. And when they get older, they'll really appreciate it.

Good advice given about the long haul - might be a good compromise, and still short enough for the boys.

OK, now I have to do a week of the tour with the boy - you've given me a new goal. He's only two, thank goodness. At my current rate of progress, I need the time

I use my company bonus, any profit made from working on others cars, selling crap I have stashed away, etc. It takes a while to save up. The vacation funds have been going into little mini-vacations. I travel a lot and have worked some trips into vacations by staying over longer on weekends. This allows me to take the family places we otherwise wouldn't go, like San Fransisco, NYC, etc. and save some coin. My wife flys free on a companion pass and my boys fly free on "award tickets" and rental cars have been free as well as most of our hotels with my points, so we only need food and spending money. We went to Vegas and sat thru the sales pitch for time shares and got free show tickets! Also, I also do a week each year as a camp counselor and my wife works the kitchen for a local summer camp my boys go to. It has been fun.

Anyway, my dad lives close enough my wife and I have talked about only making the boys do half the tour. The second half, since we plan to stay in or around the gulf coast after the tour ends. My wife likes the idea of some alone, her and I time and I like that too! The boys can endure half and spend a few days at the beach when the tour ends. Thanks for all the advise!!!

Sounds like good ole Southwest airlines. That is who I would always choose to fly with. Usually made the reservations at the last minute, any other airline and I would be in the middle seat. I almost always got my aisle seat. And with my "free" tickets I took some vacations flying on them. fd

Yep, Southwest! Rarely ever fly any other airline these days. They are pretty good about a lot of things but mostly service. Most other airlines SUCK on customer service.

BTW, I like your new avitar pic FordDude !
