Staggered Shocks Or Not

While checking out the new Dynacorn body I noticed it is not set up for staggered shocks in the rear. I was checking things out on eBay tonight and found a guy that sells a kit to convert over to the staggered shock set up. Starting bid is like $270. So my question is do you think it would be worth the money to buy this kit and install it or leave it as it is?

If you're cloning that R code I'd do it.

Sluggo the R code I have does not have the staggered shock set up on it. This was an automatic car from the factory. From what I understand only the 4 speed cars got the staggered shocks. The main reason I am considering it is that from what I have heard is that these cars wheel hop so bad and the staggered shock will stop it.

Not sure about the auto/4speed thing. I thought all R codes had it. Maybe it was all drag pack cars.

Not with the right suspension. My '69, with the 408 has 416 ft. lbs. of torque at the wheels. It has over 300 ft. lbs. by 1500 RPMs. I don't have any wheel hop. I don't have any traction, but I don't have wheel hop.

I am using 5 leaf Grab-a-Track springs with the standard shock setup. Pretty stiff, but great for preventing axle-wrap. I have yet to get slicks on it, so we'll see, when I do, if I have any problems then, but I don't really anticipate any.

That is correct. Only the drag pack cars got them (it was part of the package).

No. All 4 speed "Q" or "R" code (and G) 1969 (and 1970?) Mustangs got staggered rear shocks, regardless of the axle ratio of the rear end--not just the "drag pack" cars, which where those with an axle code of V or W. No Automatic CobraJets got staggered rear shocks.

I know for sure G code (Boss 302) got them.

BTW, how's that barnfind coming along?

Ditto.

I'm running the same spring and have never got the wheels to hop. Boil, yes. Hop, no.

All 1968.5 "R" code Mustangs that were 4 speeds also got them.

The "driveway pile" (LOL) is moving along, but slowly...the motor and tranny are out (tranny being rebuilt--motor will go on Craig's List), the brake booster is rebuilt and sitting here in the living room, and the the proportioning valve has also been rebuilt and is ready to reinstall. I have all of the new hard brake lines and as many soft as I could determine that I need when going thru the catalog. I've had distributor and radiator problems in my GT, tho, so that squeaky wheel has gotten the grease the past couple of weeks. That's done with now, so I hope to get back to the pile.

But that's a problem John. Axle-wrap promotes traction. Making the rear suspension to solid will not promote forward bite. You would be better off letting the axle wrap up a bit to get some weight transfer to the back and your tires would bite better. Then control the wheel hop by other means. Now the 5 leafs would be better for cornering to control body roll on a road course.
