Stamped concrete

Anybody do it here or had it done? Looking to rip out my sandstone patio to switch to a granite surface stamped patio and repurpose the sandstone to wrap it around my metal firepit ring

My drive, walkway and front porch are all stamped. Had it done when I built the house. What were you looking to learn?

I have a lot if it in our back patio and courtyard in front. I love it.

Wanting to know how long after the pour did they stamp it? I want a granite look, can get the stamp and was planning on having the concrete colored before the pour.

It gets stamped right after being poured and leveled. Yes, the mix is typically always colored. They also add colored powders on top of the pour depending on design and desired aesthetic. It doesn't appear to be too hard a task (nothing ever looks hard, does it) other than having the mix right and being able to get it all stamped within the necessary window. Had a very large crew when mine was done. If memory serves there were like 8 guys total not including the truck driver. Did the three car wide drive and walkway and front porch all in one shot.

Are you contemplating doing the stamping yourself?

image.jpg I actually was. My area that I was planning on doing is not that big. It has a lot of curves and dimensions are 36x23 but a large section is cut out due to a water feature. The widest is something like 17' maybe I have some buddies that all own me some favors.

Just do your research and use the right materials and tools. One key thing I think to a quality finished product is timing. When they did my large drive they did sections at a time rather than finish troweling it all and then stamping. Picture it in thirds from the house to the street. They were stamping the first section as the third was being poured.

A quick search found a lot of videos on Youtube. Watch a few. This one shows some of the common mistakes.

I wouldn't do it myself and I'm in the concrete business. Be sure your mix is straight cement without any pozzolans in it. Color will be integrated at time of batch. Colored release agents are used during the stamping and be sure to use a good sealer on it lastly to give it a wet look and really bring out the color. The real issue here is consistency in the mix. Varied amounts of water added to loads poses a risk to the consistency of the color.
