Steering Column Swap

Hey guys.

I bought a 1970 Tilt column for $350. Felt it was a steel.


I have my old column out, but the ends of the output shaft are different. My old one has a flange for the rag joint, the new one does not. Removed the shaft, thinking I could swap out with my new one to make it work.... but I can't.

Here's what my old column had;

That turn signal connector on the newer unit looks to be 72-73. If you can take a better picture of it, I can nail the year for you.
 
Those photos aren't of mine, they're ones I found online. I just needed to show the one with a flange, and the one without. I need a flange on mine, and the new one doesn't have it. What piece am I missing?
 
My understanding is the 70 is a one year only along with the Cougar steering column. The coupling is not reproduced and somewhat elusive to find. Good luck.

Got it figured out. Needed a rag joint limited to 1970 only, from my understanding. Talked to a guy who says "good luck, you won't find one, and when you do, It'll cost you $150-$300"


I found one on eBay from a 1970 cougar specifically for a tilt, even described it as exactly what I am looking for. $55 shipped later, I'm a happy camper. Should have it by this weekend. Which means I'll miss the Woodward Dream Cruise, at least in my car, but I'll still head down in my truck and see the sites.

For $350 that was a steal. :yah

When you start your hunt, the 71-73 Lincolns use the same D style rag joint as the 70 tilt. When I did my conversion, I used only the top portion of the rag joint and retained the rubber and the lower splined half from the stock column.

If you need a rag joint for 70 conversion, contact Al's of Al's Lincolns. He is on eBay, reasonable seller. He will be a good resource for you for some of the other odd and end tilt parts like the plastic turn signal switch door. Some greedy dealers are asking $50-$100 for this little plastic piece. His price on that part? $15

Got a rag joint off of Ebay for $50 shipped. It's like brand new. Installed last night. Need to finish installing the column this week so I can get my brake booster and M/C back installed. Thanks everyone for the help!
