A few of us at MBB were talking about caller ID and such, and one of the things I mentioned was that for things like Craig'sList you can get a temporary Phone Number.
I used one in a post here so that people could call me without me putting my actual phone number on here. There are lots of services that offer this (google temporary phone number) but the one I used was:
http://inumbr.com/
It's free, but uses an extension in the phone number. I believe you can pay extra to get an actual direct-number. They auto expire after a set amount of time (Day, week, Month etc)
Another thing I talked with Havok1 about was that as an officer, he sometimes needs to call someone from his cell phone, but doesn't want them getting his number by caller ID, and oftentimes people won't answer blocked caller ID calls. There is a service for this as well. (Google Caller ID Spoofing)
http://www.Telespoof.com is one example.
Basically you dial a 1800 number, and tell them who you wish to call, and they redirect your call, with ANY CallerID info you wish. We joked that the WhiteHouse might end up calling Duane one of these days I did some research and while there have been bills introduced to make this illegal, they haven't been able to pass yet, and as of yet, don't seem to have much traction. Enjoy this service while it lasts, one of these days it will be illegal. (However, all bills that make it illegal have had an exemption for Law Enforcement use)
Finally, we didn't talk about this, but one of my favorite phone tricks I keep in my back pocket is the Rejection Hotline. It is a fake phone number you can give out should anyone ever ask for your number and you don't wish to give it to them. They have numbers in almost every Area Code in the US, and basically if you call it up it will tell you that they did not want to give you their number...these are useful to have.
