stupid question re: ring gear size

What is the size of the V8 differential (non-9") ring gear? Everyone calls it an 8 inch rear, but is that the size of the ring gear or is it 8.8"? When I go shopping I want to be sure to get the right size.

Anyone have a favorite or recommended brand of ring and pinion? Or what to stay away from?

Thanks.

Frank

The 8.8" is in the newer Mustangs. You probably need to look for the 8"

The axles carriers are known for the size of the ring gear.

So...a 9 inch has a 9 inch ring gear; An 8 inch has an 8 inch ring gear and the 8.8 has an 8.8

An 8.8 has a removable rr cover whereas 9" and 8" are serviced through the front-removeable center-section.

Here is an 8.8"

Look under your '67 and you'll see a smooth rear section. This is a 9" but you should get the idea.

I looked on Summit Racing's site and they have 3 options for 3.55 gears:

http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Drivetrain/Section/Differential-Rear-End-Components/Part-Type/Ring-and-Pinion-Gears/Axle-Model/Ford-8-in/Ring-and-Pinion-Ratio/3-55-1/?Ns=Rank|Asc

Summit brand, Richmond Gear and Motive gear. Aside from the price, is there a reason to go with one of these over another, and are there better options elsewhere? My car will be strictly street driven and will see no track use.

For a strictly street driven car, you'll probably be fine with any of the above mentioned gear manufacturers/suppliers. Moreso with ring&pinion gear swaps, it's something you only want to do once.... so buy a quality gear set whenever possible. Both Motive and Richmond have been around for a LONG time and have likely fine tuned any possible quality issues. The Summit gears may be to a somewhat lesser standard.

Frank,
I agree with Dave. Those names such as Richmond have been around a long time. Good stuff. Of course, if you could find some original OEM gears........

If you need a good shop in SJ, I can recommend Aldo of GearMasters off of keyes who fixed Shag's rear end which now has some OEM stuff inside.

Cheap gears can result in increased gear whine. I'd go with the Motive or Richmond gearsets. I have motive gears in my 8" and they're pretty quiet.
