suggestions?

Took the Mustang to a local small town 4th of July parade today.

Funny the comments a classic Mustang gets compared to a lot of the other cars.

At any rate, she never overheated but it was running a lot warmer than normal and pushing the very top of the "normal" range on the gauge. If I am running down the road or if I stop at a drive through things of that nature it never gives me problems since I added the extra blade fan / aluminum radiator and Summit high flow pump.

However, today started me thinking I need to buy an electric fan setup.

Anyone have any suggestions regarding electric fans for setups they've used?

What about a shroud? Going to an electric fan also requires a larger alternator (more engine load), wiring modifications, and temp. sensor location.

I had (on car when bought) a SPAL single speed and it did a good job. Get one that moves the most air. Several like the dual sped controllers also.

I have a Spall fan. Don't recall the model but it is the same one that Johnpro had on his 66. I decided to upgrade my 65 AMP Alternator to a 95 AMP. The only problem is that if your RPM's drops below 800 (Guessing at the RPM, I don't have a Tack) for an extended period of time it will drain the battery. Other then that works fine. Just ran in an hour and a half parade today and it stayed cool the entire time. I only have the factory temp gauge on it now but I believe it was around 190-195.

I am considering getting a smaller pulley for the alternator to up the RPM's on the alternator to avoid the battery drain.

I preach this to whoever will listen, water is a better coolant than antifreeze. Obviously water is not a good antifreeze but your engine will run cooler with 15% antifreeze and "water wetter" than 50/50 mix. It's cheaper and a lot easier too.

:confu sell it and concentrate on your TA :shrug

LOL! On Saturday I took the T-tops off the TA, cranked up both the radio and AC for a drive to Aikido class. Leaving the windows down and the T-tops off during class it wasn't so hot as blue blazes when I got back in to head home.

Most of the time I don't have any issues with the Mustang running hot but I almost never hit more traffic then a stray light here or there. Installed the larger aluminum radiator, five blade fan and Summit high volumn water pump. Most of the time I am moving down the road so no problems.

If it's that big of a pita with swapping out the alternator, etc I'll probably just avoid parades (and extended traffic jams) and call it a day.

I have a shroud but the repop brackets that hold the shroud in are no where near the same size as the original ones. I had (and still have) three of the original brackets to hold on the shroud but the fourth one was mia when I bought the car. Haven't had any luck finding a new one after checking with a few friends that have parts cars. Guess I could try Mustang Mania....

Amen.

I struggled with keeping mine cool at idle for a long time. The things that made the most difference. High flow pump, a modified Mr. Gasket T-stat (stewart knock off) and 20% coolant, 5% water wetter, and water.

Thinning out the coolant made a huge difference.

I recently put an original style shroud on a local 65 Vert.....made enough difference he can do parades now when before the gauge climb to a concerned level at stop lights when it took two cycles to get thru.

I'd get the shroud added - they make more difference than you think...

I'd also consider adding a 10-12" pusher fan in front of the radiator - wire it thru a (hidden) manual switch and relay for "parade duty". That's what I did on my old 65 for several years before switching to a full-time electric setup. Worked great for adding some airflow in those situations, and does NOT require an alternator upgrade in most cases...

Eyes listening to ya Craig :thu

In fact I'm also running a similar coolant configuration 80/20 (distilled water/antifreeze) with a bottle of water wetter in both Red and Shag who never overheat. Yes a shroud on both rigs as well.

Bob, which fan did you have that fits in front of the radiator?

It's been 10 years since I did that... The fan was a generic brand "parts store" fan - nothing special at all. I think I paid ~$30 for it. With it offset to one side, there was plenty of room.

I had actually kicked around doing something like that....sort of a "situational" fan that I could turn on only when needed.

Going to look at the shroud again hopefully sometime tomorrow. Tonight I need to look at the TA's power window issue that I am still chasing.
