T-10 or T5?

65acode

I need some input and suggestions! I thought my game plan was well thought out and sound, but yesterday I discovered an issue that has me wondering which path to take. Let me give you some details on what I have.

My car is a 65 coupe, A code 4-speed car. I've decided to keep the original 289 on an engine stand and give it something fun under the hood. I now have a fairly built 347 (based on a 1990 5.0 roller block, 28 oz balance), and intended on using the original T-10 since I'm told a T5 would live long behind it. Is this reasonable? I haven't seen anyone else do this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with the original style flywheel and clutch? I noticed when I pulled the engine and trans last summer that the output shaft had some RTV around the seal, but didn't think much of it. I went to replace the seal last night, and found that the RTV was filling a 3/4" x 1/2" gap that was missing! :rant It looks like someone has dropped the transmission at some time, and the casting broke away around the bottom of the tailshaft housing. . :rr

I guess this is a good time to step back and evaluate whether to continue down the T-10 path (I'm looking for a replacement rear tailshaft housing locally as we speak), or consider a world class T5 swap? I won't be drag racing it with slicks, I'm just after a fun and good handling car that I can auto cross and possibly open track on occasion.

Lastly, I was hoping that I can get some feedback on what headers you may have used. Some say Hooker Super Comps, some say no, etc, etc. I'd hate to choke down a 400 hp small block with restrictive headers (1 1/2 Tri-y style), but I want something that fits well and won't drag over speed bumps.

Sorry for the long email, I'm just trying to take a breath and ask for some feedback from those that may have been in a similar spot.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't put more than 400hp through a T5. Stick with the T10 or install a TKO600 if you want a 5th gear.

I always thought that the T-10 was far inferior to the later T-5 series; I know that the Ford toploader is superior to the T-10.

Based upon your possible plans of auto cross or some track time, I'd not hesitate but go TKO600.

Lots of myths and fallacies exist about the maligned T10. The toploader is indeed a better tranny. Don't forget though, the big cubic inch, big horsepower Fords of the early 60's ran...tada...a T10! Even the '65 Shelby came with them. They're a good tranny, there's just better ones now.

In order to fit a TKO in a 65-66, you will probably have to do some big mods to the trans tunnel. Alternatively, there are aftermarket gear packs for WCT5's that should fit your HP ratings. I love my WCT5.

Your header choice will depend on $ and your clutch package: zbar, cable, or hydro. I run Hooker Comps (not Super Comps) and a zbar. My front is dropped 3+" and I do occasionally scrape speed bumps and steep d/ways.

Shortys are a way to go, and the HP drop is minimal. AFIK, only JBA makes one that fits a zbar. Otherwise you'd have to use shortys and the other two types of clutch setups. PM me if you have have any other detailed questions.
