t-5 clutch

o.k., so i get my new flywheel installed & torqued down, then pulled out my new clutch stuff. installed the new pilot bearing (should i give it a little dab of grease?) & go to install the clutch. well, first, the pins in the ford racing clutch fastener kit dont fit the pressure plate. they are stepped, & the hole in the flywheel is the same as the pressure plate. found some transfer punches & drill bits to align the pressure plate, but how important is it to have them in after the pressure plate is bolted down? also, the bolts didn't fit either. figured with a late model clutch & flywhhel to match, it would be metric, but is 5/16". what grade of bolts should i pick up for this tomorrow? grade 8??

I don't recall what grade mine were. I got all that stuff from Glen at Rosehill Performance here in Texas.

It would be a good idea to have the pins in place.

Sounds like a little mix n match going on. Maybe the wrong year PP?. I have a couple T5's setups and both used the step pins, you could use straight dowels but I'd be afraid that they'd fall out without the shoulder holding them in. Maybe you could call the parts supplier and see if there was a mixup?

+1 here + grease the pilot bearing

i think the problem is in the flywheel. its an aftermarket billet steel unit that has a 28 oz counterbalance for the early motor. after really studying the issue, i think the holes in the flywheel for the pins are a hair larger than needed. they are stepped, with a larger diameter towards the face & a smaller diameter on the engine side. i think i can make up some new pins out of 1/4" round stock that will work or possibly put a small dab of epoxy on the pins in the bolt kit to hold them in place until the PP is bolted down. the clutch is a valeo, which i understand to be the manufacturer of the king cobra clutch for ford & came in a full kit.

right or wrong, i fixed the clutch alignment pin issue today. since the holes for the pins were a little oversized, i put the pins in backwards leaving the larger 5/16" diameter portion sticking out of the flywheel & drilled the holes in the pressure plate from 1/4" to 5/16" to match. took a little extra time bolting the pp on to make sure the pins mated up with the holes, but it worked.
