T5 fluid additive

:doh Has anyone heard of, or tried, using Ford's FRICTION MODIFIER in a T5 tranny? A article in the June 1991 issue of "Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords" (page 54 do's & don'ts) recommends 2 oz added to the Dexron II/Mercon ATF.

While most gear oil does not include friction modifiers, ATF does include it.

The sychro's in a T5 use a clutch like material, I suppose that's where the idea came from.

Took the words right out of my mouth! I don't see the need for extra friction modifiers in a fluid that already has it.

+1 and besides, Ford friction modifier smells like burnt, creamed anus. :craz

Now, I know what the Ford friction modifier smells like from using it, and now I know what other things smell like....yuk...and I really didn't need to know that.

I suppose. I can understand that it's included in ATF because of the clutches in an auto, but I didn't get it for a manual. I always thought ATF was recommended for T-5s just because it's a lighter oil, didn't realize the synchros were friction material.
Thanks.
And thanks, Sluggo, for giving the odor a reference. How is it you know how burnt, creamed anus smells?

GM's Syncromax (Royal Purple and Redline make their own similar blends) is a common swap in manuals that are having a hard time shifting. Supposedly the extra friction modifiers help with the syncro clutches.

And yes, the friction modifiers in standard DexIII/Merc are used in WC T5's to help smooth out shifts by providing better friction qualities for the syncro clutches. The lighter oil also helps improve efficiency. Unfortunately, ATF doesn't lube bearings quite as well as gear oil, so bearing failures tend to be more common than in older trannies that run gear oil.

I use synthetic ATF. It has really good friction capabilities and also gives the bearings the best shot at staying alive.
