T5 won't go in....HELP!

So we're putting the new T5 in the 5.0 Hellcar and the freaking thing won't slide all the way in. The bellhousing is already mounted, since we'd never get it past the headers if we tried to install it while it was bolted to the trans. Fought it yesterday until I was very scared of messing up the pilot bearing and ended up quitting then.

Today, I got some help that didn't have a terminal case of attention-deficit and figured out that if we get it all lined up perfectly, it will slide in and hold itself up, but there is still a 1/4" gap between the trans and the bellhousing. Figured out that it is hitting on the bottom half of the input shaft retainer...WTF?

I'm thinking it could be one of several things:
1) The bellhousing (with one busted off alignment pin hole) is crooked
2) The clutch is in crooked (but I was careful, I swear) :lol
3) The pilot bearing is f**ed (God, I hope not!)

What do you guys think? Am I off base? Could it be something else? Ideas? Guesses? Criticism? Am I a dummy that is too slow to be doing this? :lol

Shane, the guy that owns the car, keeps repeating "But I don't know what it could be...". I'm having a hard time getting him to understand that we are well off into WTF-land already. :scar :$$$ :pbj

I just went through this nightmare and my problem was the dowels. Pull the bellhousing (if it's easy) and see if it slips on the trans easily. If you have to wrestle it on then it'll be 10x that difficult up in the air and trying to get it aligned with the input bearing. The only other thing I could think of is the input bearing is the wrong diameter (too small0. Not sure if you test fitted that before installing.

with only a 1/4" left you have to be into the pilot bearing already, is it in neutral? it could be tight on the splines of the clutch, have you tried pulling it in the rest of the way by tightening the bolts

Why don't you connect the bell housing to the tranny first and then slide the assembly into place? I guess I was spoiled when I installed the T5 into Shag.

Often times, I find that reading an entire post can reveal some not so subtle clues as to a person's reason for doing something a particular way.

Jus sayin' :nk

Mine was a bit of a pain to get that last 1/4 inch too. I just wiggled it around until it went flush. I would not pull it in with the bolts. You could damage the threads in the bell. I had to put helicoils in mine because some genius ruined them.

And, we win the prize behind door #2...the clutch disk was a little out of line. Some careful prying and then wiggling the transmission with the clutch pedal depressed, and it slid in. Hopefully we can piss off the neighborhood tomorrow evening. :lol

Yeah... doesn't take much to make this a difficult install... Sure does feel good when you see those surfaces contact!! :)
