Thanksgiving

As The Thanksgiving Holiday rapidly approaches, I thought I'd post something we could all respond to before departing next week for the upcoming Holiday.

As the Holidays and Thanksgiving approach, we all look joyfully to slowing down a bit, maybe a snuggle up to a warm fire or spending time with Family and Friends.

Another side of the Holidays is quoted from Johnny Carson: “Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.”

We have our Toastmaster Meeting this evening and I am the Table Topics Master for the night. I get to choose topics related to the Theme of the Meeting 'Being Thankful'. Here is the list I have so far:

  1. What is your favorite holiday and why?

  2. What are you most thankful for and why?

  3. Did you ever do anything out of thanks for someone or a group only to not be appreciated – how did you cope with that?

  4. What fond memories do you have of celebrating Thanksgiving

  5. Some say Thankfulness is the parent of all virtues – share your thoughts on this.

  6. Who would you be most thankful for and why?

  7. Where you ever in a situation you thought you could never get out of, only to have some thankful soul help you get through it? Explain

  8. November also is a month where we remember those who have gone before us. Describe someone who has passed you knew who you wished you could have thanked for how they acted or influenced your life before they passed
What are you thankful for?

I'll play...

  1. What is your favorite holiday and why? Easy, Christmas. Growing up was always the best time of year. Not the presents but the atmosphere and activity. Between church, school and family virtually every day for a month or more was solidly booked. Endless memories.

  2. What are you most thankful for and why? The short time I had with my father. He taught me about things I never knew he had until after he was long gone. Made it possible to reach the places and do all I have in my life.

  3. Did you ever do anything out of thanks for someone or a group only to not be appreciated – how did you cope with that? Probably but nothing comes to mind. If done in thanks I wouldn't be looking for anything anyway.

  4. What fond memories do you have of celebrating Thanksgiving
Kids table. Bitching about having to sit there but having a blast with the cousins.
  5. Some say Thankfulness is the parent of all virtues – share your thoughts on this.
Too deep for me on a Monday. lol

  6. Who would you be most thankful for and why?
My kids. They make everything i do important.
  7. Where you ever in a situation you thought you could never get out of, only to have some thankful soul help you get through it? Explain
I'm sure there has been more than one but nothing comes to mind

Describe someone who has passed you knew who you wished you could have thanked for how they acted or influenced your life before they passed Again, my dad. I was a very young man when he passed just starting out on my own. We were starting to have more than a father/son relationship when he died. Learned a lot more about and from him in that very short time frame.

Ok. Don't shoot me for being a scrooge but here's my answers

  1. What is your favorite holiday and why?

    Easter.
Up until my dad passed away anyway. It was the only time most of my brother's and sisters would come together.

I don't like Thanksgiving or Christmas. I work retail so that pretty much answers that

  2. What are you most thankful for and why?

I am thankful for my family, my wife and daughter. And all that god has blessed me with in my life.

  3. Did you ever do anything out of thanks for someone or a group only to not be appreciated – how did you cope with that?
    Can't think of anything
  4. What fond memories do you have of celebrating Thanksgiving
    None.

  5. Some say Thankfulness is the parent of all virtues – share your thoughts on this.

  6. Who would you be most thankful for and why?

  7. Where you ever in a situation you thought you could never get out of, only to have some thankful soul help you get through it? Explain

My father. I was never close to him growing because he traveled for work. It wasn't until her started working for a car publication later in life that I got to know him. I spent as much time with him in his last few years before he passed and grew to love him more than I could imagine. I am not sure if I ever thanked him enough for all he did for our family through sacrifices and hardships and he made me the man I am today.

I'll play.

I have no use for holidays.

The end.
Amen, brother! Most, if not all, holidays with family have ended up in arguments, ill will or expectations never achieved. I say "Bah humbug!"

Couple of fun guys you two are. You seriously can't spend a day with family without issue? If I can do it with my extended group anyone can. This Christmas I will have a houseful of extended stay guests to the tune of 8 extra people in from three separate households from across the country. That's not to include all the local in laws who will descend on us for the holiday. We should have close to thirty in total, ages infant to mid seventies with large counts in kids, teens, young and older adults. Pain in the ass before during and after but wouldn't have it any other way.

The people (and dogs) I hold dear have all managed to leave this place on or very near to major holidays. It's too sad. Not having little monsters makes it easy to ignore. Also, most of my family is irrelevant. It's way too much work to make some giant dinner plans for only 2 people. It takes longer to cook and clean than it does to eat.

Ba humbug.

Holidays are a pain in my ass. I haven't enjoyed them for at least 15 years. I'm always working or on call, so traveling is out. And I really don't care to socialize with my extended family, as they're all self centered asshats.
Christmas isn't too bad as I get to watch my boys have fun. Other than that, it's just another day.

  1. What is your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving, because it's the next one.. no seriously I have very fond memories of Thanksgiving when my mom was still with us.

  2. What are you most thankful for and why? My membership to the Stangfix... but really I guess being an American. I have traveled all over the world and even with all the problems here I am glad to come home. I might feel the same loyalty to any country I had been born in but I was born in the US and that's my home.

  3. Did you ever do anything out of thanks for someone or a group only to not be appreciated – how did you cope with that? My oldest son continues to challenge me with things like that. I would do anything for him but often he doesn't appreciate it. I still love him a lot.

  4. What fond memories do you have of celebrating Thanksgiving? When we lived in Chicago area we used to always go to Nashville for the Thanksgiving holiday. We would visit my great grandparents and some aunts & uncles. It was always warmer and the Southern cooking was so good. I had an uncle who loved to watch wrestling after the big meal. It was a blast

  5. Some say Thankfulness is the parent of all virtues – share your thoughts on this. Being thankful keeps us humble I think. The idea that we all have some blessings to be thankful for helps us keep things in perspective.

  6. Who would you be most thankful for and why? Probably my father, he has really been my idol

  7. Where you ever in a situation you thought you could never get out of, only to have some thankful soul help you get through it? Explain. My oldest son. I won't go into it all here. But while he is an adult I think his troubles will always be mine too. But I have had a wonderful wife and others to lean on as I stressed to the point of even having a heart attack.

  8. November also is a month where we remember those who have gone before us. Describe someone who has passed you knew who you wished you could have thanked for how they acted or influenced your life before they passed. My mom died November 13th 1998. While I am sure she knew how I felt about her I can never thank her enough for all she did.

I don't get overly excited about holidays. It's good to have the leisure time and see family, but it's just not that big of a deal to me.
I like to tell people it's Christmas every day at my house, when what I really mean is it's just another day.

Sun comes up...Sun goes down and another day goes by. The only difference is I'm home watching football and pigging out and getting paid instead of riding the desk. ( It's called a job {.} in case I lost you there )
