That egg sucker is mean!

I walked down to the chicken pen to get the eggs and feed the chickens (15 with 2 roosters) and there was a large rat snake(about 5 foot and as big around as my wrist) trying to get an egg in his mouth. I don't mind as they eat rats etc. He was having a tough time as he choose a large egg instead of a smaller one. Kind of neat to watch the jaw unhinge and working it into his gullet. I was going to wait until he got it in to catch him to move him out. I went back about 30 min. later and he was still there but no bulge from the egg. I trapped his head with a stick and grabbed his tail (strong sucker too) and pulled him out of the laying boxes. I guess he broke the egg inside his mouth and swallowed the shell/yolk). Yellow slime was dripping out the mouth...yuck! I took him into the woods and released. I know he will be back as he has found the mother load...lol. He got pretty ill about me picking him up and came at me when I put him down. I grabbed him back using the stick to trap the head again ( I know this pisses them off but there is not a better way to keep away from the jaws of death...lol) and tossed him a little way into some honey suckle vines. This is just part of living in the country I guess. Anyone had any strange critters show up ( besides the famous OWLS...lol)

I had a baby rattlesnake come crawling under Trouble when I was working on it. Yes, I can move quickly when there is a need.

Lots of skinks and anoles around my house. Messed around with a couple small snakes last weekend. I haven't heard the frog that lived around my koi pond in awhile. Maybe a snake got him... not sure. I found a snaked shed under my deck about 3 feet long last year. Inside the house I am temporarily taking care of a 3 foot Savannah Monitor. I love all things that eat mice! lol

Do those monitors snap or bite you when fooling with them (just handling them)?

We have a TON of anoles and skinks around my house. The anoles don't bother the wife, be she absolutely HATES the skinks! Every time she tells me about one she calls the "skanks". I try to tell her,"dear, that's not what a skank looks like"! LOL

We get some pretty big broadhead skinks (also called red skinks by some around here), and five lined skinks. Also the occasional glass lizards and geckos. The wife also hates the geckos!

All I get crawling around in my yard are bratty neighbor kids.
I would like to trap them, but I don't think that would go over to well. :guns

Owls and Gopher snakes with the occasional skunk. I'm the only a-hole around my house.

Oh yeah, lots of coyotes as well.

We have fake eggs in the next. It encourages the hens to lay in the nest. They figure if it was good enough for one of them, it is good enough for them.

A couple months ago, I was getting some hay out of the barn and I found a snake skeleton between the bales. It had 2 of the fake eggs in it. I guess they are good enough to fake out the snake also.

It's my understanding that they won't try to bite something that they can't swallow. I can't speak for them all, but this one has a really mild temperament, but he has been handled a lot every since my old girlfriend and I bought him around 5 or 6 years ago. It wasn't unusual to find the girlfriend asleep on the couch with the monitor laying right beside her. Don't quote me on this, but I believe one of their defenses is whipping their large tail at animals that it feels threatened by. I vaguely remember it doing this years ago. I think the key to keeping them friendly is regularly handling them.

Damn, if I had one of those things I would probably start dreaming about Komodo dragons after me or something...lol

That's interesting. I had forgotten about the Golf Ball trick too. If they swallow one they die. Heck, I might just put a Picture of one of the infamous Owls from here in there...lol

I hear a maniac running around the yard brandishing an AK47 will take care of that problem. Maybe go Nija style...lol

lol... I don't think I ever had an bad dreams, but it can get scary for your fingers when he's hungry and you are dangling a mouse by it's tail out in front of him! Hearing him bite down on the skull is a strange sound, but you get used to it. ;)
