The cmayna curse.......vacations suck.

My wife had made us reservations about a month ago to attend the "Rod Run" in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. Several thousand old vehicles from muscle cars, hot rods, classics and rodent rods are there and this year was no let down. I will have to say that they were several interesting "vehicles" to see as well as some very colorful people but that was about the only pleasures of the trip. The problems started when she made reservations at the Grand Hotel and quickly learned it was a scam and her credit card was stolen and after a call we found that in fact they had no record of us calling. So I quickly put the brakes on that with a call to the credit card company to alert them what was taking place. The card was canceled and we started over using mine. Upon arrival at the hotel things started going wrong from the get go. The first calamity to take place was we learned that her car couldn't be parked at the Hotel and had to be parked in a lot about a mile away, wtf. When she called and made our reservations, she was clearly told that we would have one space for her car, I took the Vert also but didn't expect to park it in the hotel lot. So after calming the wife down we agreed to park her car in the distant lot. In the mean time we had left our daughter and her two friends in the room to freshen up and change clothes (why I don't know). The locked door suddenly opened and a beardy older man stepped in. She said they all screamed and when they screamed he started screaming also. When things settled down they learned the Hotel had double booked our room, he apologized and said he would let them know at the front desk. After the wife and I rode the "shuttle" back to the Hotel with steam rising from the radiator and the interior looking like a bunch of hippies had partied hard after a Grateful Dead concert we learned that most of the outlets in the room didn't work. Three girls, three blow driers, three cell phones and not to mention about a half dozen other hair devices and two working outlets, you know that's not good. Now couple that with a shower that is hot enough to scald a hog and a toilet that takes from three to five times to do a complete flush, things are not looking good (forgot the TV remote is bad). So having a couple extra kids my wife made a call for a fold up bed. The staff was fairly quick to bring it however the room was so small that the only place to put it was between the two other beds. I thought well no problem, just one big wide bed. Soooo after a very exhausting day and finally getting the girls to shut up their yak yak finally time to get some rest. About midnight the wife and I were suddenly awakened by a loud thump followed by a voice saying "help me, help me". It appeared that the bed had folded up and my daughter was stuck in the folded up mattress. She was OK and after fixing the bed again it was back to sleep again, finally. Thinking what else could go wrong and after sleeping about two hours my wife told me that something was biting her toes (and it wasn't me). I told her to put her socks on and we would try to do something about it in the morning. I'm not sure it was any type of bug but when it was light we did take a good look to see if anything was crawling either in our bed or the others and everything looked OK. Now thinking its been one heck of a night we formed a game plan. The girls were gonna sleep in (wonder why) and the wife and I were going to do the show. After sleeping in they were going to relax and swim at the Hotel pool. Little time had passed before they showed up at the car and when ask how the pool was they said it smelled so bad they were afraid to swim in it. I ask if anyone else was swimming in it and they said no that others had smelled the water and elected not to swim. After returning to the Hotel that evening I noticed green algae clinging to the sides of the pool and on the bottom. Yuck! I guess they were smart to stay out of the water. So now we have made it into the second night and I'm thinking there's nothing else that could possibly go wrong. After finally falling asleep on the rock hard mattress and with the 1" thick pillow, I was once again was woke up by a weird noise. About 2AM I heard a loud whopping noise and the first thing I thought was one of the girls had fallen in the bathroom floor. I yelled "are you OK" a couple times but didn't get an answer. By about the second time I noticed four heads looking at each other wondering what was going on. I then realized it was some kind of weird noise the commode made like gurgiggleing (or whatever) that had woke me up. Did I ever feel silly since I was the only one that heard it. What a trip it was and I'm glad to be back home and I guess this will be known and the "curse of cmayna." So plan your vacations well and maybe take a good luck charm with you as well.

I have visited 5 different countries and stayed in countless motels and I have never had one that sounds that bad.

That's horrible and to add to all that apparently there were no paragraphs available either :char

I learned long ago that as soon as I come across 3 negatives (or one major one like someone knocking on the door to ask for money) I switch to another hotel if at all possible but I understand that this was a booked weekend. I would have like to attended that event but forgot about the date. Go figure my wife was up there visiting a friend this weekend and I bet they didn't look at one car! Is it mainly at the convention center or all up and down the strip?

I looked up the hotel to see where it is located and have never seen a 1.5 star rating with 312 reviews on trip advisor!
'Ranked #90 of 96 hotels in Pigeon Forge' - can't get much lower than that.

We may have use of a place to stay <10mi. from there pretty soon if you plan to go again let me know. We've got a 13yo going on 14 this year so more yakking to add. When my car is running (by end of this year I swear...) I'll be going to more car shows/cruise ins. especially in that area.

The Grand Hotel was rated worst hotel in America. http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-201_162-7286069.html.

Our club held a show there and I spent the entire weekend fielding complaints about the hotel.

I have stayed at places that were nearly as bad with some Asian groups. They all complained hard as well. There were times I stayed at places like that one right after another for weeks....

Take some advice from a guy who has spent the last decade and a half practically living in hotels across this country. Stay at one of the major chains mid-range hotels and you'll be more than happy. Step outside this group and it quickly becomes a crap shoot.

I am a Hampton guy myself. The best thing about this chain is that they are EVERYWHERE and they are all pretty much identical in design/style. That is important as it makes them more comfortable due to familiarity. The beds are good and the rooms are clean. I'll put Hilton Garden Inns right up there with them as well. Another chain I am finding myself using more and more is Hyatt Place. It is their answer to my other favorites. They have a small "bistro" in the lobby where you can grab a decent bite to eat and a few drinks as well.

Having travelled a fair amount myself, :stu

We did find a great campground while down there and from here on out we'll be towing our beds with us. That place was nasty, nasty, nasty. Maybe that shinny headed dude from "Hotel Impossible" will pay them a visit and straighten them out. :hs

Another option in that area is to rent a cabin/lodge. I hosted my sales team there for a multi-day meeting once and it was awesome. Rates were comparable to an average hotel and you could not beat the accommodations.

This is a review from the link posted above...

JordynC's assessment: "If you are looking for a hotel with: pubic hair stuck to the bathroom floor in some unidentifiable, gelatinous liquid; chewing tobacco spit oozing down the halls and corridors; spiders actively making webs in every corner of your room; carpeting so greasy and dirty you wouldn't want to sit your luggage down - let alone walk around barefoot; dingy bedsheets and towels as rough and thin as sandpaper; and a room so putrid and smelly it causes a gag-reflex when you walk in... by all means, stay at The Grand Resort."

Sounds like a good time. :puk :puk :puk :puk :puk :puk :puk

Get this.....This past Saturday we went to a festival at a Winery about 2 hours north. Wifey wanted to stay the night instead of driving home. I gave in......

We finished the festival and headed to the hotel. As soon as I got on the street, I knew I wasn't going to be happy with the hotel (Quality Inn Suites). Pull into the parking lot and my stomach starts to turn. Walk inside and look down at a very worn and dirty carpet. Yes we already paid for the room so that's been flushed down the toy toy. So now do we stay there and be grumpy all night or head home to our own place. As soon as we opened our room's door, I told the Mrs, we're driving home tonight.

Barf!

Hampton and HG Inns are the way to go. Dbbl Tree and Hyatt are good as well.

This thread reminds me of a business trip to Alabama a while back. I had been to the area plenty of times to know where and where not to stay, but the project manager who reserved my room has never been there. He picked the closest and cheapest place in town. I didn't even make it to the parking lot, just drove by and said screw that. Paid for my own room in a motel that didn't have permanent renters, busted windows or broken down cars in the lot.

My friends and I rented a cabin for the seven of us after the Charlotte Grand National a few years ago. We had a blast and it was inexpensive. The hardest part was parking three enclosed car trailers and an open one.

Several weeks ago I stayed at a Double Tree for the first time for a 4 day conference. It was a combined hotel and convention center in Columbia,SC. Though it was an older facility, it was nice, very clean and had a great staff and amenities.

I travel every week when I am not having heart attacks or broken feet. I prefer the Hilton chain but also stay in Marriott and Holiday Inn Express. When I go to Gatlinburg area we usually camp. We should plan a bunch of us to meet up there at one of the events!

Hey I'm in. My wife made the comment that the only thing that didn't happen was to catch on fire. Well, while she was downtown the firetrucks showed up at the Hotel with lights and sirens. I told her that well it may have caught on fire she accused me of lying. My daughter spoke up and said "but mom, the firetrucks were there, we seen them". The wifie was without expression.
