The Incredible Shrinking Product strikes again

Ok, now I'm ticked off! I just found out that Safeway has jumped on the bandwagon and has shrunk their formerly 1.75 quart ice cream size to 1.5 quarts. Before that, of course, it was a full 2 quarts. This on the heels of my 24 ounce bottles of Pepsi shrinking to 16.9 ounces. :rp

Is there anyone who still makes a half gallon size of ice cream anymore? I understand Costco does, but only in Vanilla.

I really wish manufacturers would quit shrinking their product and just raise the price.

On a related note, I wonder if this package shrinkage somehow results in the inflation rate being under reported. :po

I think the proper answer is, "It's Bush's fault"

When I read the tag line, I thought you went swimming before you went to bed :weas

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

Hi Frank, I was pi$$ed off when Dreyer's Ice Cream was the first to go from 2 quarts to 1.75 and not raise the price. It was all over the news. Psychological games, I suppose.

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

gotta love marketing. they try and give the illusion that the ain't raising the price.

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

I tell the clerks at Braums every time I go in that it make me mad at the smaller size. I think they add more air also.

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

Kind of the opposite of fast food joints and "super size my arse" for .49¢

I see no harm in it. A little less ice cream can't really be a bad thing... can it?

Political, but who cares.

Determining the Consumer Price Index, which in turn drives/determines the inflation rate..... is a freaking joke.

My biggest complaint is that government changes the items within the $100 "market basket of goods" in order to make their reporting look better. The base point $100 basket of goods established back in 19-- (I forget) is roughly at $217 now. If the price of an item within the market basket goes up in price... let's say that a gallon of milk jumps from $4.00 to $5.00.... instead of adjusting the index higher to cover the increased cost, the "weight" or importance of the item is reduced. The USGOV's logic is that consumers will buy less milk because of the price increase.

The CPI-U is a political tool and nothing more.

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

We got an ice cream maker for Christmas and have loved the results. In fact just yesterday we made some awesome mint choc chip complete with green food coloring. It take as good if not better than than most you can buy. I say screw them and go buy yourself a maker. I don't know if it is much cheaper but you know the quality of things that go into it.

Re: The Incredible Shrinking Package strikes again

There's nothing better than homemade ice cream. Growing up we lived on a small ranch with a couple of milk cows, and the fresh cream made the best ice cream I've ever had!!!
