There goes the neighborhood

Mike:

If you think about it, before the YOM program, with few exceptions, a black plated car (such as yours) was prima facie evidence of being a California car with all the characteristics that come with that designation. When the YOM program began, it was possible to assign an original '63 series black plate to any '63 to '69 year model car even if that car spent its first 40+ years in the rust belt resulting in a devaluation of the significance of an original black plate.

Now the cachet of an original black plate is completely eviscerated and the caveat "Buyer Beware" is even more critical when it comes to things like rust. Documentary provenance is the only way to confirm a vintage car's registration history.

I suggest that the neighborhood has been gone for a while..................................o_O

I think it's good. In this day, with people texting, instagraming and facebooking, having a black plate is a good thing. I just hope that the NAACP doesn't chime in and remove it from us white folk.

Just another case of bureaucrats not thinking through the consequences of their actions. I of course don't like this because I have original black plates on my car. I hope the new plates are somehow easily distinguishable from original plates. Perhaps they will be missing the "63". That's okay with me. But they never should have allowed installing original 63 series plates that were not previously associated with the car.

I wasn't too excited by this when it was first announced, but I decided to order them for my 2015 Mazda3. The car is red so the black plates will look better than the white ones, also the front plate is right in the center of the black grille and is pretty ugly. Black will blend in better.

The configuration will be A12 34B instead of ABC 123 and they'll be reflectorized, so they will be different.

The new license plates are here! The new license plates are here!

Yes, for the Mazda. As a license plate collector, I had to get some. The whole plate seems to have a reflectorized coating. They actually look like a very dark brown in some lighting situations.

I just realized that's a zero at the end, not an O. I saw a picture of someone else's plates that start and end with B0 and the 0's are identical. My registration confirms it.
